Your child can read a word perfectly but struggles to spell that same word when you ask them to write it. Why?

Reading and spelling are connected, but they require different skills.

When reading, your child sees the letters and blends the sounds to recognise the word. When spelling, they must listen to the word, break it into individual sounds and remember which letters represent those sounds.

This is why teaching phonics, sound segmentation and spelling patterns is important.

Your child can sing A, B, C perfectly and still struggle to read a simple word like cat.

Why? Because when children begin reading, they need to connect letters with the sounds they represent.

Knowing that this letter is called B is useful. But to blend bat, your child needs to recognise the sound /b/.

That’s why, when introducing early reading, I place strong emphasis on letter sounds and sound-letter relationships, while children also learn letter names.

The goal isn’t to avoid letter names. It’s to make sure children understand that letters represent sounds, because that knowledge is essential for blending words.

Sounds → Blending → Words → Sentences → Reading

Is your child pronouncing the B in these words?

comb • climb • plumber • thumb • crumb

In these words, the letter B is silent, so we see it when we spell the word, but we don’t pronounce it.

This is why children need to understand that not every letter we see in a word is always heard when we pronounce it.

Teaching silent-letter patterns can help children improve their reading, spelling and pronunciation.

If you’re teaching your toddler the short /u/ sound, avoid starting with words like uniform, universe and unicorn.

Why? Because the u at the beginning of these words is pronounced with the /yoo/ sound, not the short /u/ sound you hear in words like umbrella, under, up and uncle.

When introducing letter sounds to beginners, choose examples that clearly demonstrate the sound you actually want the child to learn.

The right examples can make blending, reading and spelling much easier later.

Your toddler doesn’t need to learn “A for Apple” immediately.

Start with the letter sound itself. Let your child hear it, say it, recognise it and become confident with it. Once the sound is familiar, you can introduce objects that begin with that sound.

Think of it this way:

Master the sound first → connect the sound to objects → begin blending → start reading.

Building the foundation in the right order can make the next stage of reading much easier.

How to correctly pronounce “penalize”

Pronunciation- Penalize (PEE-nuh-lyze)

Meaning - To punish someone or give them a disadvantage because they have broken a rule or done something wrong.

Example:
The teacher may penalize students who submit their work late.

Stop teaching your child “C for Circle” without explaining the sound.

The letter C can make more than one sound. In cat, C makes the /k/ sound, while in circle, C makes the /s/ sound.
