Tick tock says the time for Builders in Construction Industry (CI)
it is no more a news that (we) builders are in competition to take what belong to us in the built environment. But I have come to realise that majority of us only put our hope and set our limit to the passage of building code.
I bring you news that the Nigeria Building code (NBC) which other profession are statically against is making way to be passed to law. Kudos to our spokesmen.
In my own view, i think we can stand firm on our feet, handle any form of building even skyscrapers...mind you, building is not limited to erecting structure alone. basically we have ;
A) Building construction
B) Building services
C) Building maintenance
D) Building management
Only the builders will understand!
But then, we can stay ahead of our competitors, if we can work on the following diligently viz:
1) comprehending and interpretation building drawings
2) understands the basics of setting out, using of the theodolite and leveling instrument for setting out , picking points as well as transfer levels.
3) understand the nooks and crannies of construction technology
4) preparation of materials and labour schedule to precision
5) construction process of various building components and members
6) have good eye for finishes and understand the right techniques involved.
7) knowledge of construction managements especially the theory of X and Y, power and skills of manager, quality management and health safety
8) ability to supervise other building works such as mechanical and electrical work apart from concrete and reinforcement work.
9) have the skills In production of programmes of work, method statement ,critical path analysis, planning, scheduling and been proactive in decision making. The use of latest software aids this process as well.
10)knowledge of structural design and detailing 11)knowledge of services design and principles and finally,
12) to be updated i.e get acquainted to the latest materials, finishes, techniques, trends in construction industry.
so fellow builders, i strongly believe that, if we make those 12 points as listed above which i refer to as (the 12 builders code) our objectives; and make sure we unlock each code, sky is not even the limit. This is my submission , I mean no fight, I mean no beef with other professions in CI industry.
Thanks for reading, meet you guys at the peak of this profession!

BUILDERS WILL TAKE THEIR PLACE!!!someone first asked, what is the difference between a builder and a civil engineer?I took time to enlightened him; read along with me.Concerning professionals in construction industry, let me briefly state the roles of relating profession.we all believe that the major role of an architect is production of building plans; considering some principles, (not to construct or supervise building production.)Her own is to liaise with the builder on how to bring his dream on the CAD or paper to reality. The builder ensures BUILDABLITY. Mind you, Architectural design is not a graphics design. For acclaimed civil Engineers, categorically speaking, they have seven branches and that a part of it is the structures. The role of structural engineer is to design for all structural members such as beams, columns slabs structural steelwork etc., liaise her design with the builder on how visible is the fabrication of all these members and their arrangement to fulfill the aim of his design( under worst loading the structure most not fail).A building services man designs for mechanical/ electrical services and liaise with builder on the arrangement and fixing ( hmmm... I know you will argue that he can't do that)The quantity surveyor takes care of the estimations of project. Now, who understands estimation process the more? structural engineer, architect, others professionals? The fact remains that, if (Qs) overestimate or price substandard materials or add up what is not suppose to be, it is only a builder that understand the techniques of estimation.so what's now the work of a builder? From the aforementioned premises, judge for yourself. The next question the person asked is ,you mean it is only builders that can do all d work on site, when it comes to structures?I laughed, and i gave emphatic NO.According to Nigeria building code, builders are not trained to hijack the work of other professions but due to the vast scope of our profession, we use all the knowledge we gain from all others professions to carry out BUILDING PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT....That's why a builder can easily detect error and suggest correction to architect design because, whenever he sees design, he does not only view it from the perspective based on architectural mentality alone but reason about the structural stability, estimation in other to be economically safeand comfort of the occupant(s) and maintenance including the aesthetical view.Hope you are getting along. The next question ,what is d difference between structural and civil engineer? To me, to call someone civil engineer is a wrong usage because the word ''civil engineer'' is like a general name that encompasses all construction expertise.so, ''structural engineer'' is someone who's area of specialisation in civil engineering is mainly in structures.someone that specialise in highway construction is not a structural engineer which implies he/she should not have any thing to do with structures. Mind you, a structural engineer is not a builderFriends, construction is in three(3) aspects. The design, fabrication(production and management) and maintenance. So, if your interest is more of design, then, architecture or civil engineering is good but if your interest is the actual construction of building (of course, we all want to bring our dreams of building or structure to come true) then, the best choice for you is to call on ''a builder'' which in the profession isthe only professional that span across all other professions in construction company industries for effective delivery of a project.NB. As regards the incessant building collapse in Nigeria that have been recorded so far, who then are those responsible for such project. Is it not those that form bossy on such project(s) and yet it collapsed?Hummm... Let me not mention the profession. Because you know yourself.Mind you, since the builders have been handling projects and structure, BUILDERS have NO record(s) on building that are managed and supervised by a professional builders that have evercollapsed!!!you can Google search to confirm... No not one.(1)...ALL PROFESSIONS IN BUILT ENVIRONMENT ARE UNIQUE IN THEIR OWN WAYS..The next question is, who is now suppose to be the project manager of structures?Be wise, choose by yourself. Let me say a project manager is someone that have knowledge to manage a project. Mind you, project are of different types. Here, We talk about structures, who is suppose to be the project manager?Be wise, engage professional (builders) for effective delivery.BUILDERS BUILD RIGHT.Thanks for readingcompiled by toh-bee

FUTA’s Department of Building Technology is World
Class
--Council of Registered Builders
The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria
(CORBON) has described the Department of Building
Technology of the Federal University of Technology,
Akure as world class in terms of its curriculum and
configuration. Professor Kabir Bala, Team Leader of
CORBON Accreditation Panel stated this during a
statutory Visit to the Department of Building
Technology of the Institution recently. Bala who led a
team from CORBON adjudged the curriculum of the
Department as one of the best he has ever come
across, saying it has global acceptability. In his words
“The Department of Building curriculum is one of the
best I have ever seen as it captures the whole
essence of the Building Programme and it can be
presented anywhere in the world” . Speaking on
facilities, he said the Department has full

Commenting on the quality of staff Professor Bala
said “I am happy with the crop of staff in the School
considering the age of the School,” adding that
teamwork is seen among the staff as all of them were
involved in the accreditation exercise. Professor Bala
did not end his report without mentioning the
Library, he said the University Library has good
collections of books that can assist the students in
their field of study. “The E-Library is an advantage, it
will guide the students and even open them up to
what operates in some other Schools of Building
outside Nigeria.”

Daramola, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-
Chancellor (Academic) Professor Tunde Arayela
