RAISE YOUR CHILD TO BE GENEROUS!!!
Younger children are selfish by nature. They think the world revolves only around them; and so you often hear “I want…” “Give me…” “It’s mine!” “It’s for me” and other variations as their mantras. This self-centredness is something they grow, or are supposed to grow out of, but some kids never cross the bridge from self-centredness to generosity. They become takers rather than givers.
While it can be argued that some children maybe self-centred by temperament, there is no doubt that parenting has a great impact on a child’s tendency to give rather than take.
The spirit of generosity is one quality that parents easily overlook. Most parents focus more on developing personal competencies, but developing a sense of sharing in kids amidst a culture that says “having more stuff is what makes us happy” has plenty of positives. Children who are able to share their time, their space and themselves generally have more friends and experience more success than those who are self-centred and mean- spirited. Simply put, they are leadership materials!
Here are six practical ways to develop a sense of generosity in your child:
1. Model generousity by being kind to those in need. Our Children watch and copy the things we do. So, let them join you in taking a meal to a sick neighbour, see you stopping to be kind to people in need or donating things to the homeless or orphans. These acts will prompt them to ask you questions that will remain in their memories and teach them a lot in life.
2. Expect your child to help
These days, children get fewer opportunities to help at home than it used to be. But as a parent, be conscious to expect your child to help with chores and activities that benefit others such as setting the meal table, helping a younger sibling get dressed or caring for a sick younger sibling. It teaches them that their contribution is valuable and very much required.
3. Think ‘us’
Encourage your children to make allowances for each other in the home or away; which may mean everyone watches a sibling’s special TV show rather than some children missing it because ‘it’s boring!’ A family mantra you can use to buttress this is “We put ourselves out for each other”, and you put in your best to reinforce this family mantra.
4. Don’t let them get away with meanness.
Children won’t always get it right when it comes to behaving generously. This means that you need to remind your children when their words and actions are intolerant or unkind, or when they need to put their own needs behind the needs of others. Welcome other children into your home so you get to see your children practice sharing their space and toys with others. Don’t forget to give positive reinforcement when you see your child sharing, or being generous too.
5. Encourage giving.
We need to encourage them in everyday life to give their generosity a kick start. You can begin by encouraging them to give toys, books and clothes away when they have finished with them, or doing a good deed to a neighbor or friend.
The skills that children need for future success are changing as technology and new economic forces are transforming workplaces, but the basic attitudes andcharacter traits needed to succeed such as teamwork, initiative and generosity haven’t changed too much over time.
6. Facilitate generosity by having your children earn and keep their allowances in 3 jars labelled ‘save’, ‘spend’ and ‘give’. Their “give” jar may be emptied quarterly or biannually for charitable causes. Encourage them to continue using the “save-spend-give” model for managing their money as they grow into adults. Giving thus becomes a part of them.
