FEDERAL MINISTRY OF EDUCATION
PRESS RELEASE
29 April 2026
DATA, INNOVATION AND NATIONAL COLLABORATION DRIVE FG’S PUSH TO RETURN MILLIONS OF OUT-OF-SCHOOL CHILDREN TO LEARNING
The Federal Government has intensified efforts to address Nigeria’s out-of-school children crisis through data-driven reforms, strengthened collaboration, and targeted investments to expand access, improve foundational learning, and ensure every child is reached.
This was highlighted at the 2026 Basic Education in Nigeria Bootcamp in Jos, where stakeholders developed practical solutions to improve access, retention, and learning outcomes.
The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, emphasised the importance of credible data and learner tracking, noting that effective reform depends on identifying out-of-school children and deploying targeted interventions.
To support this, the Ministry is expanding the Digital National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) and rolling out the Learner Identification Number (LIN). The 2025/2026 Annual School Census has captured over two million learners, while nearly one million out-of-school children have been mapped for reintegration.
The Minister highlighted investments including over ₦106 billion in UBEC grants, ₦22 billion for teacher training benefiting about 978,000 teachers, renovation of over 10,000 classrooms, and distribution of 7.8 million textbooks.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive, equitable, and quality education through sustained investment and coordinated national action.

Assalamu Alaikum!
Your Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusif (Abba Gida-Gida), you are truly a great leader. It is necessary to appreciate a champion of progress. We, the primary school teachers, sincerely express our gratitude and full support for your continuous efforts to bring positive change to the State Universal Basic Education system. You have achieved so much, and we cannot forget the following:
Payment of entitlements (pensions) of staff who served before us.
Recruitment of new teachers, even though the number is still inadequate.
Construction of new classrooms and provision of teaching and learning materials, although some areas still need more.
Promotion of qualified teachers, although many are still waiting.
Regular payment of salaries, even before the end of the month.
At this moment, the Board (SUBEB) needs a fixed amount of money to be allocated to each Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) directly from the local government account, in line with Section 9(b) of the UBE Act 2004. This should be backed by law to ensure smooth operations. In some LGEAs, the NUT is currently covering administrative expenses, particularly in my LGEA.
We also advise Your Excellency to provide more working tools and vehicles for departments responsible for administration, monitoring, and quality assurance. This will help them effectively supervise and ensure full implementation of your policies. Additionally, we request that you safeguard your ongoing projects, just as your counterpart in Jigawa State has done by providing adequate materials, purchasing vehicles for Education Secretaries, and giving motorcycles and computers to headteachers.
Finally, it is important to give teachers the attention they deserve by addressing the following concerns:
Disparities
Pending and current promotions
Annual increments
Workshops and training
Educational assistance for in-service teachers
The teachers are solidly behind you!🙏
