April! Autism awareness month.
April is Autism Awareness Month, a global observance dedicated to fostering understanding, support, and inclusion for individuals on the autism spectrum. While the United Nations officially recognizes April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day, the entire month is used to celebrate neurodiversity and advocate for the rights and opportunities of autistic people.
The Shift to "Autism Acceptance"In recent years, many advocacy groups, such as the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) and the Autism Society of America, have shifted their focus from "Awareness" to Autism Acceptance Month.
This change emphasizes moving beyond just knowing autism exists toward fully including and respecting autistic individuals as valuable community members.
In Nigeria, the colour is orange. Although Blue is traditionally the primary colour, popularized by the Light It Up Blue campaign, where landmarks globally are illuminated in blue light. However, many now also use rainbow or gold to represent the broad spectrum and neurodiversity.
The puzzle piece has been a long-standing symbol representing the complexity of autism, though it is controversial within some parts of the community. The rainbow infinity symbol is increasingly used to represent the infinite variations of the human brain.
For 2026, the global theme highlights "Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has Value," focusing on dignity, respect, and the contributions of people living with Autism.
As an inclusive school, we aim to provide support for all children, including those on the spectrum with love, care, acceptance, and attention.
We believe that being neurodiverse is to be neurodivine.
