PARENTING IN NIGERIA: BUILDING A BETTER FUTURE
Parenting in Nigeria is deeply shaped by culture, faith, and community. From an early age, children are taught values such as respect, hard work, honesty, responsibility, and obedience. In many families, raising a child is not the responsibility of parents alone. Grandparents, relatives, neighbours, and the wider community often play a role. Indeed, it takes a village to raise a child.
Education is another major priority. Nigerian parents make significant sacrifices for school fees, books, extra lessons, and other opportunities because they see education as a pathway to a better future. But as the world changes, parenting must also evolve.
1. Communicate, Not Just Command
Respect is important, but children also need to feel heard. Instead of always saying, “Because I said so,” parents can create room for honest conversations. When children can ask questions and express their feelings, they are more likely to develop confidence and make responsible decisions.
2. Balance Discipline with Emotional Support
Children need correction, but discipline should guide rather than destroy their confidence. Constant criticism and comparison can make children feel inadequate. Encouragement, praise, patience, and quality time help build emotional strength and self-esteem.
3. Teach Skills for Real Life
Good grades matter, but they are not enough. Children also need financial literacy, communication, problem-solving, creativity, leadership, and digital skills. Parents should also teach them how to use technology and social media safely and responsibly.
4. Lead by Example
Children learn more from what parents do than what they say. Integrity, hard work, kindness, responsibility, and respect are values best taught through everyday example.
Conclusion
Better parenting in Nigeria does not mean abandoning our traditional values.
When parents listen, guide, support, and lead by example, they help raise children who are disciplined, confident, responsible, and prepared to contribute meaningfully to a better Nigeria.
