HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY, NIGERIA

Today marks 66 years of our Independence as a nation, a journey not without challenges, yet defined by strength, hope, and an unyielding determination to thrive.

This anniversary is another opportunity for us to reflect on our journey so far, our victories and accomplishments, and the resilience that continues to define us as a people.

It is a reminder of the sacrifices of our founding fathers and the collective efforts that have sustained our pursuit of nation building.

On this historic day, let us rekindle our hope, renew our commitment, and realign ourselves to building a Nigeria that truly reflects our dreams and aspirations.

Happy 66th Independence Anniversary to all Nigerians! May God bless our nation and continue to guide us toward a prosperous future anchored on unity, equity, and justice.

STOP WRITING LESSON OBJECTIVES THAT CANNOT BE MEASURED

One of the most important parts of a lesson plan is the lesson objective.

But here is where many teachers struggle.

They write:

❌ “At the end of the lesson, learners will understand nouns.”
❌ “Learners will know about photosynthesis.”
❌ “Learners will appreciate the importance of honesty.”

These may sound good, but how will you know whether the learners actually “understand,” “know,” or “appreciate”?

A good lesson objective should describe something the learner can demonstrate or do.

Try this instead:

Instead of:

❌ Learners will understand nouns.

Write:

✅ By the end of the lesson, learners should be able to identify nouns in given sentences and classify them into appropriate categories.

Instead of:

❌ Learners will know the causes of soil erosion.

Write:

✅ By the end of the lesson, learners should be able to identify and explain at least three causes of soil erosion.

Instead of:

❌ Learners will understand fractions.

Write:

✅ By the end of the lesson, learners should be able to add simple fractions correctly.

A simple test for your objectives

After writing an objective, ask yourself:

> “What exactly will I see or hear the learner do if learning has taken place?”

If you cannot answer that question, rewrite the objective.

Useful action verbs for lesson objectives

Depending on the lesson, you can use:

Identify
List
Define
Describe
Explain
Differentiate
Compare
Classify
Demonstrate
Calculate
Construct
Analyse
Evaluate
Create

These verbs make your objectives more observable and measurable.

One more important point 👇

Your lesson activities and assessment should connect to your objectives.

If your objective says learners should be able to analyse, but your entire lesson only asks them to recall definitions, there is a mismatch.

A well-planned lesson should have a clear chain:

OBJECTIVE → TEACHING/LEARNING ACTIVITY → ASSESSMENT

When these three work together, your lesson becomes much more intentional.

Teacher challenge for today:

Before your next lesson, look at your objectives and replace vague verbs such as know, understand, learn, and be familiar with with observable actions where appropriate.

Then ask:

“Can I actually assess whether my learners achieved this objective?”

That small change can significantly improve the quality of your lesson planning.

Which part of writing the lesson note gives you the most difficulty? 👇

The Delta State House of Assembly has passed the Executive Bill seeking to institutionalise the payment of 13th-month salary to public servants in the state, giving statutory backing to the welfare policy introduced by the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

The bill was passed on Tuesday following its third reading during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor. The Speaker described the passage as a significant step towards strengthening workers welfare, noting that the legislation would provide greater certainty for public servants while boosting morale and productivity.

With the passage of the Executive Bill, Delta State becomes the first state in Nigeria to establish a statutory framework for the payment of 13th-month salary to public servants. The legislation is expected to further strengthen the welfare of the state workforce and support improved productivity and service delivery.
