Alom Cosmas Directs Immediate Evacuation of Students to Safe Locations
Agasha, Benue State — The Acting Provost of the Benue State College of Health Technology, Agasha, Mr. Cosmos Alom, has directed the immediate evacuation of students from the institution’s hostels to safe locations following heightened communal clashes between two neighbouring communities in the area.
The directive, issued earlier this week, was described as a proactive safety measure aimed at protecting the lives of students and ensuring their safe and orderly movement away from the affected areas.
In response to the security situation, the Acting Provost made immediate logistical arrangements for the evacuation exercise, including the provision of the institution’s bus to assist in transporting students to safer locations. The management also worked to ensure that students were evacuated in an organised manner without unnecessary panic.
Mr. Alom subsequently issued an official memo to students and parents, informing them of the security situation around the institution. While acknowledging the seriousness of the incident, he appealed to parents and guardians to remain calm, assuring them that the situation was being closely monitored and that appropriate measures had been put in place to safeguard the students.
The Acting Provost emphasised that the decision to evacuate the students was purely precautionary and was taken in the best interest of their safety and wellbeing.
He further urged members of the public, parents and guardians to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information capable of creating unnecessary fear or tension.
According to the Acting Provost, the institution will continue to monitor developments in the area and will communicate officially to students, parents and the general public once normalcy has returned and a safe date for the resumption of academic activities has been determined.
The management of the Benue State College of Health Technology, Agasha, therefore reassured students, parents and other stakeholders of its commitment to prioritising the safety and welfare of its students and staff at all times.

A DREAM BECOMES REALITY: MY PARTING GIFT TO THE BENUE STATE COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY, AGASHA

As I conclude my four-year tenure as Provost of the Benue State College of Health Sciences and Technology, Agasha, my heart is filled with profound gratitude to Almighty God for His faithfulness, guidance, and abundant grace throughout this remarkable journey.

Today, I am delighted to share one of the greatest milestones recorded during my stewardship. The College has successfully secured National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) academic accreditation for six National Diploma (ND) programmes:

- Community Health
- Public Health Technology
- Epidemiology and Disease Control
- Environmental Health Technology
- Orthopaedic Cast Technology
- Medical Laboratory Technology

The recent approvals for Orthopaedic Cast Technology and the long-awaited Medical Laboratory Technology are particularly special to me. They represent my farewell gift to this great institution as I bow out as its Chief Executive Officer.

Beyond academic accreditation, the College also secured full professional accreditation from the relevant regulatory bodies, namely:

- Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria (CHPRBN)
- Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN)
- Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON)

These professional accreditations provide our students with the assurance that their training meets national standards and qualifies them for professional practice.

Today, the Benue State College of Health Sciences and Technology, Agasha proudly stands as the first College of Health Technology in Benue State to have six NBTE-accredited National Diploma programmes alongside professional accreditations from the relevant councils and boards. What a dream come true!

When I assumed office four years ago, I inherited a College with a student population of only 370, and only one professionally accredited programme in Community Health, with that accreditation already approaching renewal. While many saw limitations, I saw possibilities. I envisioned a modern, academically vibrant, professionally recognized, and nationally respected College of Health Technology that would serve as a model for others.

By the grace of God, that vision gradually became a reality.

Beyond these landmark accreditations, we significantly raised the academic standards of the College, expanded our admission capacity, increased student enrolment from 370 to 980 students, embarked on massive infrastructural development, strengthened institutional governance, improved the learning environment, enhanced the College's visibility nationally, and restored confidence in our institution. These accomplishments, together with many other reforms, have repositioned the College as one of the leading Colleges of Health Technology in Nigeria. Above all,the college is upgraded to operate as a monotechnic institution in Nigeria.

These achievements were not the work of one individual. They were made possible through teamwork, dedication, sacrifice, and the unwavering support of numerous individuals and institutions.

By the grace of God, I had the privilege of serving the Government and people of Benue State under two Governors—His Excellency, Chief Samuel Ortom and His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia. I was equally honoured to work with three Honourable Commissioners for Health—Hon. Dr. Joseph Ngbea, Hon. Dr. Yanmar Ortese, and Hon. Dr. Paul Ejeh Ogwuche; three Permanent Secretaries—Dr. Andrew Amee, Dr. Ms Beatrice Aondonguemo Tsavmbu, and Dr. Cephas Hough; and four Directors of Public Health—Dr. Kurt, Dr. Igbabul, Ms. Esther Menger, and Dr. Agbadu J., alongside many other directors and senior officers of the Ministry of Health.

I sincerely appreciate the Governing Council, management, staff, students, alumni, traditional rulers, host communities, regulatory agencies, development partners, friends of the College, and every stakeholder whose support, encouragement, prayers, and commitment contributed to the successes recorded during my administration.

Most importantly, I return all the glory to Almighty God. Without His grace, wisdom, strength, and divine favour, none of these accomplishments would have been possible.

As I hand over the mantle of leadership, I do so with great satisfaction and hope. I leave behind a stronger institution, a firmer academic foundation, expanded academic opportunities, improved infrastructure, and a legacy that future administrations can build upon.

It is my earnest prayer that the Benue State College of Health Sciences and Technology, Agasha will continue to grow from strength to strength, attain even greater heights, and remain a centre of excellence in health sciences and technology education in Nigeria.

The journey began with a vision. It was sustained by faith, hard work, teamwork, and resilience. Today, that vision has become a reality.

To God alone be all the glory.
