Our goal is to improve vocabulary & literacy among participants by encouraging healthy competition & rewarding winners. We are a group of passionate youths who want to do our bit to bring back education into our schools. Our modus operandi involves organising and hosting annual Spelling Bees to help students between the ages of 10-17 hone their spelling skills, exercise their public speaking abili
ties, and get rewarded for academic feats. INSPIRATION: We were inspired by the life we wish we had; a type of education that is enriched with meaningful extracurricular activities. The increased use of short words and misspellings on social media, which has gradually crept into the classroom, is a cankerworm eating deep into the fabric of education in Afikpo. Someone has to do something about it, and we decided to start first. VALUES: This movement is founded on the core value of humanity. That is why we give our all to ensure that we reach and touch the lives of as many students as possible. IMPACT: Over the years, we've successfully screened over 500 participants and unveiled at least 15 Akeelahs. We've created an award category not common in the halls of fame, a "SPELLEBRITY" of the year award, reserved for our most bodacious and eloquent spellers for each event. We have helped students believe that there is a pathway to fame that lies through academics. FUNDING: Our events are funded by internal funds raised through sale of registration forms. However, we depend mostly on external funds received as support from well-meaning sons and daughters of Afikpo to subsidize the cost of forms, reward winners adequately, and provide the required aesthetics for each event. ASPIRATIONS: This Spelling Bee is one we hope will put Afikpo on the map where academic excellence is mentioned anywhere in Nigeria. Scripps National Spelling Bee is a big name. And to be honest, "Elite International Spelling Bee" is not an unachievable dream.
