1. You can talk about last term without your shoulders tensing up.

2. You've started thinking about September with curiosity, not dread.

3. You've had at least one full day without checking anything school-related.

4. You can name one thing that went well last term without being prompted.

5. You're already a little bit excited — even if you won't admit it yet.

If four or five of these are true, you're in a good place.

Children lose an estimated 20–27% of their school-year reading gains over a long break if there's no reading at all during that time — but even 15–20 minutes of reading a few times a week is enough to prevent most of that loss.

You don't need a formal programme.

Just encourage the parents in your school community to keep a book in the house this holiday.

Running summer lessons?

Here are three things that separate a summer programme parents remember from one they forget:

1. Keep it lighter than term-time — same subjects, different energy. Parents can tell when it's just term-time in disguise.

2. Show, don't just teach — a small project, a demonstration, something a child can bring home and talk about.

3. End with something visible — a mini showcase, a certificate, anything that gives the holiday a sense of completion.
