As we await the onset of raining season in Nigeria, this is the time to begin our preparation for planting.

Depending on the size of your farm, you either clear manually or you mechanised it by ploughing first.

2. Get your seeds and all the essential inputs ready.

Here we are discussing profitable farming - You can't use seeds that you harvest from the watermelon fruits you have eaten, go for hybrid F1 seeds that yield optimally and resistance to diseases. We have different types of hybrid seeds, you must consider yield, market acceptability, maturity days and success rate from those who have planted it.

- Insecticides, pesticides, fertilizers and labour are major issues to consider.

3. Market: Who are you selling to, your targeted market, where are they? What is their measurement? At what rate are they buying? When is the peak sales? Any factor affecting sales and prices?

4. Do you have the knowledge? Watermelon is not maize or cassava? Pls note, it requires care and proper technical know-how.

5. Are their other farmers beside you planting watermelon? What type of seeds are they growing? In what way are they going to affect you and your farm?

6. Any plan for irrigation in case the rain stops or delay?
