SURVIVING THE CRUX OF UNEMPLOYMENT IN NIGERIA
Being a speech by Mr Iorsamber Martin (FEntD, MICRM, ASM) Deputy Registrar Operations, Institute of Advanced Entrepreneurship Research and Development Nigeria (IAERAD) during the JAC week marking the passing out of Batch B 2014 corps members in Nasarawa State.
1. Protocol
2. Introduction
Let me begin by congratulating you all for a successful national service in Nasarawa State. Those of us who have been with you observing your day to day activities in the course of your service must appreciate your efforts. I also want to use this medium to convey the message of appreciation of the Governing Board of the Institute of Advanced Entrepreneurship Research and Development (IAERAD) to the NYSC in Nasarawa State and Nigeria at large for the good relationship we have established all these years.
3. To my dear youth corps members who will be passing out in the next few days, I congratulate you. You came, you saw and you have conquered. I’ll welcome you into the job market. Please my fellow youths, erase from your mind completely the idea that there are no jobs in Nigeria. There are many organizations out there willing and ready to employ but the problem is that most Nigerian graduates are unemployable! I must tell you the truth because you are going into the real world now. Most Nigerian youths believe in getting a job where from the first month, they should be paid N500,000.00, given a comfortable accommodation, an official car and attached with a driver while they on their part have nothing to offer to the organization worth that much. My fellow youths on national service, such jobs only exist in the Nigeria movie plays.
4. The reality about jobs in Nigeria is that organizations employ graduates whom they know are capable of changing the fortunes of that organization. No organization will employ you because they want to pay you salary. They employ you because they want you to make money for them or help their organization to achieve its set goals. They only pay you for a job well done so that you should not leave. Unfortunately, the present situation of the Nigeria education system does not adequately prepare an average graduate for a job in the market. I am here to tell you the truth and the truth I must tell you. Most of the courses we read in the university today have very few chances of employing us because they do not meet the demands of the present labour market. Government on their part cannot, and I repeat government cannot give you the number of jobs we are expecting. White collar jobs come from companies. There are many companies out there desperately looking for young, energetic and fresh graduates like you so that such graduates will take their organizations to the level but the graduates are not there to employ. The irony there is that there are job vacancies without candidates to fill them and there are millions of unemployed people in the country. I will come to how we can resolve this crisis so that you can fit into the available jobs in the concluding part of my talk.
5. Many organizations out there are recruiting presently. Those of you interested in military and paramilitary jobs should check their websites. They normally display whenever there are regular recruitments. Nigerian Navy has announced for direct short service. Check Nigerian Air Force too. The West African Examination Council WAEC is also recruiting presently, go and check the website. Also log onto www.iaerad.org.ng there are vacancies there too. Instant Access Consult is also recruiting in Jigawa, Kaduna and Bauchi you can apply as their coordinator. Send your C.V to [email protected].
You can also check Business and Trade Magazines or local newspapers to see job vacancies. Another place to get good job titles these days is the social media. It is unfortunate that most people go to the social media these days only to chat with people. Read news feeds on these media and you will get very viable information.
Another area you can get good opportunities is by talking to people. Yes. This is called networking. Find people who work with certain organizations and verify job openings in the place, it works 50%. Most organizations that are employing these days are from the service sector. Statistics has shown that 70% of the employment in Nigeria in the last three years has been done by this sector. Visit such companies and make enquiry. I got the job I am doing today by entering the employer’s officer, verifying about the organization and exposing how best I can fit in, if I am employed by them, at the end, I was gladly employed. It works 40%.
You can also check employers’ website. Enter the name of the organization in any search engine like Google, yahoo or any one. Look at the ‘about us’ section of the company. It will give you the profile of the company. From there you can get something to initiate a cover letter. Cover letters help a lot. You get the job with less competition if you prove you are qualified.
Another area is your PPA. As an insider, if you have shown good qualities in your PPA, make moves and seek retention, you can get an appointment there and use it as a starting point. The starting point does not matter. I finished my matters work and started with a job of N10,000.00 in 2012 but today, I am here.
Try to get information about the company, the customers, the collaborators, the competitors and the business climate of that organization. This is called 5C analysis. It will give a ground to write the company and state how you can come in to lead it to the next level.
Remember, no organization is ready to employ a dummy. They will only invite you for an interview if they know you can help the company to excel. Your C.V therefore matters a lot.
6. But the question is, how can your qualification fit into the demands of every company recruiting? Yes, it is possible. The Institute of Advanced Entrepreneurship Research and Development, Nigeria which has been approved by the federal Ministry of Education with consent of the Attorney General of the Federation, through its erudite researchers who are seasoned professionals in the academia, public service and captains of industries designed a curriculum that can convert a mere Nigerian Graduate who is virtually unemployable by the nature of what he/she has studied into a competitive employee to every organization. It has developed a postgraduate course known as enterprise operations and customer management. Every organization you see out there is an enterprise. The study module for this program is such that it exposes you to the day to day operations of an enterprise. It teaches you how you can revive an organization and put it on the track. How best you can lead your company to excellence through effective marketing and prudent service delivery. How you can satisfy the customers of that organization so that they keep coming back. How you can manage the personnel and assets of any company to grow to an enviable height. Before any company can grow, it is the customers that contribute to the growth of that organization. With this syllabus as a guide, this program turns an ordinary graduate into a highly professional graduate within few days.
-Be you a lawyer, a medical practitioner, a teacher, an engineer, an architect, sociologist or anything you are, that organization you will work with is an enterprise and that enterprise has customers. Enterprise operations and customer management is now your best fit, matching you with the real demand in the labour market.
7. By the time the recruiting officers see your application letter and C.V to discover how versatile you are, they will definitely do all in their possession to ensure that you are hired. I am saying this from a personal experience. This is a course you really need to advance your chances in this peculiar times Nigeria is in. You can know more about this course by visiting www.iaerad.org.ng . The next exam is coming up in July and registration still on but will soon close.
8. It takes about N97,000.00 to run this course, write the exam and get the certificates. However, because of the partnership we have with the NYSC which was facilitated by Mrs Mary Dan Abia, corps members enrol for the program at only N20,000.00 . This morning when I was coming for this Lecture, I got a call from the Registrar of the institute, Mr. Ayo J.T informing me that the chairman of the governing board of the institute has directed that in the spirit of celebrating the new president of Nigeria, His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari, any batch B 2014 corps member in the country that is interested in writing the forth coming professional certification examination should pay only N16,000.00
9. Thank you for giving me your attention. I wish you a very successful job hunt in the labour market.
