Rethinking Boko Haram: Conflicting Narratives among Nigerians in Belgium: A Case Study from Holy Spirit Community, Leuven.
Abstract
Over the past six years, a range of conflicting narratives have emerged around the Boko-Haram violent crisis, its social profile and motivations. These narratives tow the paths of ethnic, regional, cultural and religious cleavages in Nigeria (Olaniyan & Asuelime 2014). Some see it as a declaration of war by Muslims against Christians, some as a sponsored conspiracy against the Muslim north and others interpret it as the western (America and the British) war against the nation. One of the implications of these cleavages is the widening of already existing cleavages in Nigerian society, especially among Nigerians in the diaspora. Relying on a case study from the Holy Spirit community (Leuven), I focus on the interpretation of Boko Haram among Nigerians and its attendant construction of cleavages. I argue that the construction of cleavages among Nigerians in Leuven follows the processes of ethno-religious and political framing. It is argued further that framing serves as platform through which Nigerians in the diaspora attribute meaning to events, persons around them and beyond. In this way, frames become the tools or ‘social apparatus’ through which (vexing) social issues, especially Boko Haram’s insurgency are viewed, contested and codified.

JUST A REFLECTION FROM AN ANTHROPOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE
RACE AND RACIALISATION AND ITS IMPLICATION IN THE GLOBALISING WORLD
Race can be partially perceived to be a competition between superiority and inferiority, civilization and savagery, furthermore, what ought to be and what not ought to be. Race has come to differ a bit here from ethnicity, while ethnicity paid more attention on how ethnic groups are formed and constituted; race has come to divide people along color lines, beauty, wealth, intelligence, braveness and wisdom etc. it has become practically impossible to live and exist in our present world without race coming into play, consciously or unconsciously.
The objective of this little piece of work is to bring to fore few implication of racialization in this our new world era. Where migration of different race into another has been on the increase. Where different races are getting married with other races thereby bring up offspring.
By race, rights, liberties are ignored and most oftentimes have effects on labor, mobility, social status etc. For instance an Indian is easily spotted out in the European labor market, likewise and European in an Indian labor market. An African can hardly hide himself in the midst of Asian likewise an Asian who will be drawing to himself unnecessary attention because of his outlook, traits and appearances. Locations where people are given birth continue to play visible or invisible role as regards to labor and mobility.
In the words of Harrison 2002, there is a form of global discrimination in which class, race and gender differences is now on the increase. A lot has given way for the emergence of race, class, geographies and country of origin as against country of resident.
According to (Duster 2003, Graves, 2001) sees race as a symbolic order that is based on characteristics that can be observed or history that is framed according specific, social and historical contexts, that is misrecognised as natural category. To stress this notion further, the word symbol represent language, ideas and beliefs that is formed and reformed by people rather than pre given, that just needs to be identified.
Race and radicalization is more or less a social construct which gives undue advantage in the areas of geography, wealth acquisition, color, intellectual capability, beauty, braveness, and wisdom which become tied with certain psychological traits. Race is socially and politically constructed. This has given rise to conflicts as people have different meanings and perception about race. Often times one views race with its own racial and cultural spectacle thereby making subjective conclusion. The media has its own perception of race and racialization which is often times projected to people irrespective of the meaning their instincts and cultural background makes available to them. Different people holds different meaning about race which oftentimes is not what is projected by the media
From class discussion we saw how monogetic which holds the argument that all human originated from Adam and Eve and on the other hand polygenetic which holds a contrary view.
Finally it can be seen that even in the near future race will still be playing a significant role on how people should be perceieved, classified and identified. Where people come from will still be the topic of discussion rather than where people are resident. Intellectual capabilities and wisdom of people as well as their color will be paid more attention to rather than the environment and culture where people grew up from. This is where nature and nurture controversy will have a lot to explain

i have been making research on the topic, SELF REGULATED LEARNING AS AN EDUCATIONAL INNOVATIVE PROJECT AND ITS IMPACT ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT.
This is the area i have actually investigated during my thesis work in vrije universiteit brussels and will soon come out with a blue print on the way forward in the educational sector in nigeria, Nigerian education must be lifted from its present status. we want a situation where through self regulated type of teaching method, our graduates will be more of job creators rather than being job seekers, where our graduates will compete with their comtemporaries in other parts of the world, we need a change from the existing status quo.
THE WAY FORWARD
Blended learning as an alternative to rescue Nigerian education system from doldrums and its comatose state. Blended learning emerges as perhaps the most prominent delivery mechanism in all levels of education and higher education in particular. It could be as well extended to business, government and military settings. Blended learning is all about a convergence between traditional face 2 face learning which has been the hallmark of Nigerian education system and computer mediated learning environment. The fact remains that all great learning is blended.
In the past, face 2 face learning approach and electronic learning (e-learning) have remained largely separate. If we must meet up with the new demand or measure up to the recent technological advancements in the field of education, it must be made a priority to combine this two learning approaches. This will help to curb the devastating effect of traditional learning approach where knowledge is being transmitted from teachers to students as oppose to constructivist learning approach as a way of learning where students are meant to create their own knowledge, take charge of their own learning and eventually be able to access their own learning objectively with the teacher serving as a guide.
This approach is in line with the project embarked upon by Ekiti state government in 2012 known as Ekiti e- school program. This is according Kayode Fayemi led government is geared towards technological competence. This is a laudable project by the state government, but major concern is the lack of maintainace and sustainability culture
This initiative by the government is to transform high school education system and prepare students to meet the standard of higher education like in developed countries where teachers and students alike in higher education system exchange ideas with colleagues through online learning platforms.
Sharing ideas might help to bring the needed change we have all craved for……………contd
