🐖 ROUNDWORMS IN PIGS ALERT 🚨
Roundworms are one of the most common and dangerous internal parasites in pigs. They are caused by a large white worm called Ascaris suum, which can grow up to 30 cm long. These worms affect growth, feed conversion, and overall pig health.
How pigs get infected:
📍 Eating contaminated feed or water.
📍 Picking worm eggs from dirty pens, soil, or bedding.
📍Contact with infected pigs through droppings.
Signs to watch:
👉 Poor growth / weight loss
👉 Rough hair coat
👉 Loss of appetite
👉 Coughing / breathing difficulties (“thumps”)
👉 Diarrhoea in heavy infections
👉 Sudden death from intestinal blockage
Economic impact:
❌ Slows growth and reduces profits
❌ Wasted feed due to poor feed conversion
❌ Liver condemnation at slaughter (milk spots)
Prevention is key:
✔ Clean and disinfect pens regularly
✔ Provide clean feed & water
✔ Deworm pigs at regular intervals (ivermectin, fenbendazole, levamisole as advised by vet)
✔ Quarantine and treat new stock before mixing
✔ Control wet/muddy areas where eggs survive
Remedies if infection is suspected:
🔹 Isolate sick pigs immediately.
🔹 Consult a veterinarian for proper diagnosis.
🔹 Deworm using recommended anthelmintics under veterinary guidance.
🔹 Clean and disinfect pig houses, feeding and watering equipment.
🔹 Improve hygiene and sanitation to prevent re-infection.
