I am so thankful to my beekeeping class of 2020.

Every year, I train people interested in knowing about beekeeping for free and mentor them for a whole year. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, I only took on about 15 persons in 2020. By the time we were 6 months into the mentorship, only about 7 were still standing and surprisingly, they were all ladies.

As we finished the years session, they were very appreciative and presented me with this memorial. They are the only group to do so since I started my free training and mentorship program in beekeeping.

"when you train a woman, you train a nation. When you train a man, you train an individual"

Still on women in beekeeping. my observation over the years has been that men are better beekeepers probably because of cultural and stereotypic roles assigned to every gender. However, women are more patient and pay more attention at adding value. In the long term, women make more money from little volumes as a result of value addition.

In this picture, my team lead was demonstrating how to render beeswax from honey combs. They were later thought how to make creams and candles from beeswax, They sell these and honey on market days and "gbam"; That's the beginning of a sustainable enterprise.

On my next and last post on women in beekeeping, I will share a story of how an old lady that suffered from rheumatoid arthritis is earning from her "illness". stay tuned

Still on the subject of women in beekeeping. This woman; very quiet and meek came for the training late, she didn't get a bee suit and insisted she will be part of the practical session. I warned her of the dangers but she did not show any sign of backing down so I had to give her my extra half jacket. she wore it and tied her wrapper below, she would not even move back, she wants to be part of the team to transfer a colony from a clay pot hive to a KTB

Women have always been the most encouraging of all my students. They would always show and display a healthy attitude towards beekeeping and bees. I will share some other stories of women in beekeeping later. this was at Lapai in Niger state, Nigeria.

This batch of students of mine are the best I have had so far, interestingly they are all ladies, these ones I felt will not be interested in working with bees.

We inspected a recently colonized hive.

It's been a long time I posted here, but I promise to engage my followers this season.

So I baited a hive by this over head tank in a factory and was called to come bring it down to allow for servicing of the water tanks.

I prepared the apiary location only to find out that the hive is filled with honey on such a such time.

If you're thinking what I am thinking, I will convert that elevated platform to my apiary for several reasons.
1. It completely keeps the hives secure from vandals
2. It provides enough shed
3. It seems the bees love that elevation. It's so productive for them
