METAMORPHIC PETROLOGY:
1. INTRODUCTION TO METAMORPHISM
This introduces the process by which existing rocks (igneous, sedimentary, or older metamorphic rocks) are transformed by heat, pressure, and chemically active fluids without melting.
2. AGENTS OF METAMORPHISM
The main factors that cause metamorphism are:
Temperature: Recrystallizes minerals and changes rock texture.
Pressure: Compresses rocks and aligns minerals.
Chemically active fluids: Hot fluids transport ions, causing new minerals to form.
3. TYPES OF METAMORPHISM
Different geological environments produce different kinds of metamorphism:
Contact metamorphism: Caused by heat from nearby magma.
Regional metamorphism: Caused by high temperature and pressure during mountain building.
Dynamic (fault-zone) metamorphism: Occurs along faults due to intense pressure.
Hydrothermal metamorphism: Caused by hot, mineral-rich fluids.
4. METAMORPHIC MINERALS AND INDEX MINERALS
Some minerals form only under specific pressure and temperature conditions. Examples include chlorite, biotite, garnet, staurolite, kyanite, and sillimanite. These are called index minerals because they indicate the metamorphic grade.
5. METAMORPHIC TEXTURES AND STRUCTURES
This covers the appearance and arrangement of minerals in metamorphic rocks.
Foliated textures: Minerals are aligned in layers (e.g., slate, schist, gneiss).
Non-foliated textures: Minerals are not layered (e.g., marble, quartzite).
6. METAMORPHIC FACIES AND FACIES SERIES
A metamorphic facies is a group of mineral assemblages that forms under similar pressure and temperature conditions. Examples include:
Greenschist facies
Amphibolite facies
Granulite facies
Blueschist facies
Eclogite facies
7. CLASSIFICATION OF METAMORPHIC ROCKS
Metamorphic rocks are classified by:
Texture: Foliated or non-foliated.
Mineral composition: The dominant minerals present.
Parent rock (protolith): The original rock before metamorphism.
8. REGIONAL AND CONTACT METAMORPHISM
This section compares the two major types:
Regional metamorphism: Covers large areas during tectonic activity and mountain formation.
Contact metamorphism: Occurs around igneous intrusions where rocks are heated by magma.
9. PROGRESSIVE AND RETROGRADE METAMORPHISM
Progressive metamorphism: Rocks experience increasing temperature and pressure, forming higher-grade minerals.
Retrograde metamorphism: Rocks cool and may be altered by fluids, producing lower-temperature minerals.
10. PLATE TECTONICS AND METAMORPHISM
Explains how tectonic plate movements create metamorphic environments at convergent boundaries, subduction zones, continental collisions, and rift settings.
11. FIELD IDENTIFICATION OF METAMORPHIC ROCKS
Students learn to identify metamorphic rocks in the field by examining:
Color
Mineral composition
Texture
Foliation
Banding
Hardness and other physical characteristics
12. PETROGRAPHIC STUDY OF METAMORPHIC ROCKS
This involves examining thin sections of rocks under a polarizing microscope to identify minerals, textures, and the sequence of metamorphic events.
