VACATE vs VACATION

Know the difference.

*Vacation is a noun and vacate is a verb*.

*Vacation* is to spend or take a holiday/break while _vacate_ is to move out of a dwelling, either by choice or by eviction.

*ENGLISH GRAMMAR*
(Course code: ENG 102)

It’s that time of the year again when schools go on vacation, families plan family trips and the words ‘*VACATE*’ and ‘*VACATION*’ fill the air.

I was booking space for my kids’ training for this holiday and the chap at the other end of the line went:
“Don’t worry madam, just let them come when they vacate...”

And in my mind, I was like 😳 vacate ke?

Such expressions are not new in our environment:

“When the children vacate, we will have some time to rest.”

“Please, when are the teachers vacating?”

“My children’s school vacated last week.”

But do you know that the word ‘vacate’ has no place in the expressions above just like it has nothing to do with vacation. Shocked? Here goes:

*Vacation is a noun and vacate is a verb*.

*Vacation* is to spend or take a holiday/break while _vacate_ is to move out of a dwelling, either by choice or by eviction.

So when you say you want to vacate, you’re actually saying that you want to leave a place and when you say your pupils are vacating, you’re saying that they’re probably moving or are being sent out of their class.

You see why despite our big grammar and speaking through our noses, we’re still sometimes unintelligible to English native speakers?

How then do we say the above?

“When the children go on vacation, we will have some time to rest.”

“My children’s school went on vacation last week.”

So now, are we vacating this week or going on vacation?

"The bottom line is this: your students need and deserve for you to be their independent reading champion. Reading changes lives. Not only is reading the fundamental skill that underpins all learning, but it’s also a crucial component in the development in a curious mind, a gentle spirit and a loving and empathetic heart. And our world desperately needs more of those things." http://bit.ly/2AOTcMe
