NIGERIA, UGANDA PARTNER TO ADVANCE TVET IN AFRICA

Nigeria, through the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), is strengthening collaboration with the Uganda Vocational and Technical Assessment Board (UVTAB) as part of on-going reforms to advance Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Nigeria and across Africa. The partnership focuses on curriculum development, assessment standards and benchmarking of best practices in technical education.

The joint visit of NABTEB and UVTAB to NERDC marks a significant milestone in regional TVET integration. By leveraging NERDC’s curriculum expertise, NABTEB’s assessment mandate and UVTAB’s benchmarking initiatives, both countries are positioning technical education as a key driver of youth employment, industrial growth and technological independence across the continent.

In his welcome address during the visit to NERDC Headquarters, Sheda, Abuja, on Friday, 24th April, 2026, the Executive Secretary of NERDC, Professor Salisu Shehu expressed delight at the collaboration. He emphasized that NERDC remains Nigeria’s apex institution for curriculum development, research and innovation, with the statutory responsibility of developing and reviewing syllabi for Basic, Senior Secondary and Technical Education.

Professor Shehu further noted that NABTEB, established by Act 70 of 1993, is Nigeria’s foremost examination body for technical and business education. He explained that the visit aligns with NABTEB’s 2025 initiative to review and validate 26 trade syllabi for technical colleges, covering emerging areas such as smart agriculture, coding and robotics, solar photovoltaic installation and creative media.

He added that the collaboration seeks to harness NERDC’s expertise in ensuring that the reviewed trade syllabi meet national education policy requirements, and are adaptable for adoption across other African countries.

Also speaking, the Registrar of NABTEB - Dr. Mohammed Aminu Mohammed, described the engagement as “a deliberate strategic meeting of minds” and the beginning of a “robust and enduring partnership.” He stated that the collaboration aims to ensure that the revised trade syllabi align with current industry demands and competency-based standards.

In his remarks, the representative of the Federal Ministry of Education - Mr. Kolawole Osundeyi, commended UVTAB for partnering with NABTEB. He described the collaboration as both strategic and necessary in the face of rapid technological advancements, noting that Nigeria has continued to strengthen its technical colleges through infrastructure upgrades, curriculum modernization and teacher-capacity development.

The visit focused on key areas including collaborative curriculum development, sharing institutional expertise and best practices, and aligning NERDC trade curricula with NABTEB examination syllabi, as well as national competency assessment standards. Through this synergy, the partners aim to reinforce technical education as a catalyst for sustainable development in Africa.

As the national curriculum authority, NERDC is expected to guide the integration of the 26 reviewed trade areas into the national curriculum framework and ensure quality assurance in their implementation.

The benchmarking visit is projected to yield actionable outcomes, deepen institutional partnerships and contribute significantly to the advancement of TVET in both Nigeria and Uganda. It also reflects a growing trend among African countries to harmonize TVET standards, enhance graduate mobility and boost global competitiveness.

Present at the visit were members of the Management teams of NERDC, NABTEB, and representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education, UVTAB
amongst others.
