Among them are academic staff who are essentially teacher educators and researchers; graduating from outstanding indigenous and foreign universities.SCOPE OF SERVICE AND ACHIEVEMENTSNERDC is an implementing agency for policies of the Federal Ministry of Education concerning the Universal Basic Education (UBE) and other educational programmes nationwide. The high quality research and developmental activities of NERDC has for over 2 decades provided the nation with the building blocks for strategic educational planning and development, education quality assurance, policy formulation and implementation.Curriculum Development & Implementation (Basic and Secondary Education) • Development, printing and dissemination of the 9-year Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) to schools nationwide. • Review of 40 main stream Senior Secondary School (SSS) subjects based on the new Senior Secondary Education (SSE) curriculum structure. • Developed curriculum for 34 SSS Trades/Entrepreneurship subjects. • The development of curriculum implementation materials such as Teachers Handbook for the 9-Year Basic Education Curriculum (BEC); Teachers Handbook for the new Senior Secondary School (SSS) curricula; etc. Book Development, Quality Assurance & Readership• Reviewed over 2000 titles of school books and related instructional materials • Developed the National Book Policy • Organised Zonal Book Fairs on regular basis. • Assessment of Reading Culture of Learners at Basic Education Level. • Mentoring school teachers for the promotion of readership in children • Developed core textbooks for 9-Year Basic Education and Senior Secondary Education Curriculum. NERDC COMMENCES WRITING WORKSHOP FOR ACCELERATED BASIC EDUCATION PROGRAMME CURRICULUM.

‎The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) has commenced Writing Workshop for the development of the first draft of the revised Accelerated Basic Education Programme (ABEP) Curriculum.

‎The workshop, which is part of the ongoing review of the ABEP Curriculum, brought together distinguished participants and resource persons to contribute their expertise towards the development of a comprehensive and responsive curriculum for vulnerable learners, particularly over-age out-of-school children and youths.

‎Declaring the workshop open on Tuesday, 18th August, 2026 at Hawthorn Suites & Apartments, Area 11, Abuja,
the Executive Secretary of NERDC, Professor Salisu Shehu, said the exercise was a follow-up to the previous workshops held to develop the Conceptual and Pedagogical Framework for the ABEP curriculum review.

‎Professor Shehu expressed satisfaction with the progress recorded so far, noting that the review process was steadily advancing towards the production of quality outputs.

‎He described the review of the ABEP Curriculum as fundamental to the provision of qualitative and equitable basic education opportunities for vulnerable groups, particularly over-age out-of-school children and youths.

‎The Executive Secretary commended the Honourable Ministers of Education for their efforts toward providing sustainable solutions to the challenge of out-of-school children and youths in Nigeria, noting that strategic policy initiatives had continued to place the country on the path towards quality education for all citizens, irrespective of circumstances.

‎Professor Shehu while identifying the adoption of an Outcome-Based and Competency-Based Curriculum Framework as one of the key milestones of the ongoing review, noted that the revised curriculum would incorporate core knowledge, skills and competencies that are future-oriented and capable of producing nation builders and drivers of economic transformation.

In his words“We believe that when we get it right here in this technical room, Nigeria will no longer be a nation that produces children and youths with little or no practical skills, but will be set for global competitiveness”.

‎The Executive Secretary appreciated TaRL Africa and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) for their partnership and support towards the review of the ABEP Curriculum, and commended the Head, Curriculum Development Centre (CDC) - Dr. Chima Egbujuo for convening the workshop.

‎While disclosing that through the partnership, the revised curriculum would proceed to the piloting stage once the draft is developed, he explained that appropriate measures were being put in place to ensure that the pilot exercise commences in the coming academic year.

‎According to him, following the piloting exercise, stakeholders would return to the technical sessions to review the outcomes, finalise the curriculum and prepare it for release and use across the country.

‎Professor Shehu assured participants of NERDC's commitment to the successful implementation of the project, urging all stakeholders to contribute their best towards producing a high-quality curriculum that would effectively respond to the educational needs of vulnerable children and youth.

In his technical presentation, the Head of CDC - Dr. Chima Egbujuo highlighted critical areas of focus in the workshop while emphasizing the need for being meticulous in the crafting of the learning objectives, activities and overall design process.

He informed the resource persons of the ways of working to achieve the overall objectives of the workshop, and afterwards, went further to demonstrate practical steps to ensure quality in the curriculum writing process.

NERDC’s Manual for the Assessment and Quality Assurance of Instructional and Learning Resources in Nigeria expressly recognises e-books and other e-based instructional materials as resources that require appropriate standards for quality, accuracy, suitability and usability.

NERDC PARTICIPATES IN THE ACCF VALIDATION WORKSHOP AT Namibia.

The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) is participating in the on-going development and validation of the African Continental Curriculum Framework (ACCF) workshop taking place at Windhoek, Namibia, between 11th – 13th August, 2026.

The workshop provides a platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and technical engagement on the development of the African Continental Curriculum Framework (ACCF), from Early Childhood Care Education (ECCE), to secondary education.

It forms part of the continental efforts aimed at strengthening collaboration among African member states towards the harmonization and advancement of curriculum frameworks across Africa, in line with Agenda 2063, and the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA).

The conference participants will also identify priority competencies, values, and learning areas for African learners, exploring mechanism for harmonization, while preserving national and regional contexts.

The event which is being organized by the African Union (AU), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture (MEIYSAC) of the Republic of Namibia, has in attendance, Directors of Curriculum, and Curriculum Experts from AU states to chart the way forward on the Roadmap for the African Continental Curriculum Framework (ACCF).

NERDC is being represented at the conference by the Executive Secretary, Prof. Salisu Shehu, and the Head, Curriculum Development Centre, Dr. Chima Egbujuo, who will be making a paper presentation at the event.

NIGERIAN WRITERS, AUTHORS & PUBLISHERS

The People Who Put Our Stories on the Page

Nigeria has never been short of stories.

Our writers have documented our history, questioned our society, preserved our cultures, challenged injustice, entertained generations and given the Nigerian experience a voice far beyond our shores.

From the pioneering works of Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, Flora Nwapa, Cyprian Ekwensi and Amos Tutuola, to the powerful voices of Buchi Emecheta, Elechi Amadi, Christopher Okigbo and Ben Okri, Nigerian literature has continually expanded the boundaries of how Africa is imagined and understood.

Achebe’s Things Fall Apart became one of the defining works of African literature, while his editorial work with the Heinemann African Writers Series also helped create opportunities for other African writers.

Writers such as Buchi Emecheta brought powerful perspectives on womanhood, family, migration and social expectations. Flora Nwapa helped open new literary space for African women, while Wole Soyinka demonstrated the power of literature, theatre and intellectual engagement to interrogate society.

And the tradition continues.

Contemporary Nigerian writers including Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Helon Habila, Sefi Atta, Chigozie Obioma, Ayobami Adebayo, Nnedi Okorafor, Teju Cole and many others continue to tell stories that cross generations, cultures and borders.

But writers cannot do it alone.

Publishers are also custodians of culture.

Behind every book that reaches a reader are editors, publishers, designers, printers, booksellers, librarians, educators and countless others who help transform a manuscript into a book that can travel from one generation to another.

Nigeria’s publishing history has produced remarkable figures such as Aigboje Higo, whose work with Heinemann Nigeria helped advance the publication and distribution of African literature. The Heinemann African Writers Series ultimately published hundreds of titles, including more than 80 by Nigerian writers, giving African authors access to readers across the continent and internationally.

Today, Nigerian publishing continues to evolve through indigenous publishing houses and new platforms creating opportunities for contemporary Nigerian voices. Publishers such as Kachifo, Cassava Republic and Parresia have contributed to the growing contemporary literary ecosystem.

Their impact is bigger than books.

A good book can preserve a culture.

A good book can challenge an idea.

A good book can give a child a dream.

A good book can make a nation examine itself.

And a good book can ensure that a people’s story is not forgotten.

As we celebrate Book Lovers Week, we celebrate the Nigerian writers who gave us stories, the authors who gave us ideas, and the publishers who helped those stories find their readers.

NERDC Concludes First Batch of Book Assessment for National Book Ranking Exercise.

The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) had successfully, concluded the first batch of the assessment of textbooks submitted for the 2026 National Book assessment and Ranking Exercise, marking a significant milestone in the Federal Government's efforts to improve the quality of instructional materials used in Nigerian schools.

The exercise, which held between 23rd to 27th July, and conducted by panels of subject specialists, curriculum experts, language professionals, and education stakeholders, focused on textbooks for Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School (JSS 1), and Senior Secondary School (SSS 1) in line with the phased implementation of the new national curriculum.

The assessment forms part of the Federal Ministry of Education's new quality assurance framework, which requires all textbooks to undergo a rigorous assessment before they are ranked for possible recommendation and use in schools. The initiative is aimed at ensuring that learners and teachers have access to high-quality instructional materials that are curriculum-compliant, academically sound, inclusive, and pedagogically appropriate.

Speaking on the successful completion of the first batch exercise, the Executive Secretary of NERDC, Prof. Salisu Shehu, commended the assessors for their professionalism, dedication, and commitment throughout the exercise. He described the assessment process as a critical step towards strengthening quality assurance in educational publishing and enhancing learning outcomes across the country.

According to him, the introduction of the book ranking system represents a major reform in the assessment and approval of textbooks, designed to promote excellence, transparency, and healthy competition among publishers while ensuring that only quality instructional materials are recommended for use in Nigerian schools.

“The integrity of the assessment process remains paramount. Every textbook was assessed using approved assessment guidelines and established quality benchmarks to ensure fairness, objectivity, and consistency. Our goal is to provide Nigerian learners and teachers with textbooks that effectively support the implementation of the national curriculum and contribute to improved educational outcomes," he noted.

Prof. Shehu further expressed appreciation to the panel of assessors for dedicating their expertise and time to the rigorous assessment process, describing their contributions as invaluable to improving the quality of educational resources in the country.

The ES who noted that the assessment reports from the first batch will proceed to the next stage of the ranking process in accordance with the approved Book Quality Guidelines and Ranking Framework, further reaffirmed NERDC's commitment to maintaining a transparent, credible, and evidence-based process that reflects international best practices in textbook evaluation.

In her remarks, the Director of Book Development Centre (BDC), Dr. Judith Kanu, lauded the dedication of the assessment panels and reaffirmed the Council's commitment to maintaining the integrity of the ranking process.

She informed that every submitted textbook was subjected to a comprehensive assessment using established criteria to ensure that only books that meet the required quality standards would be recommended.

Dr. Kanu noted that the conclusion of the first batch marks another important step in NERDC's drive to institutionalizing a transparent and credible textbook assessment system that will enhance curriculum delivery and improve learning outcomes across the country.
