Like company founders, entrepreneurial managers rarely have access to the requisite human, social or financial capital to see a project to success. Early decisions about core contributors are crucial and not unlike core founders selecting their cofounders and future top executives. There are three basic relationship types. There are relational members, usually friends or family; unknown members, like relative strangers; and acquaintances. Not surprisingly, entrepreneurs are often tempted to form a relational team, reaching out to friends, family, or close coworkers from the same department as primary contributors and partners. The reasoning is sound. Relational teams often share similar values, viewpoints, and perspectives; therefore a high trust level is inherent. Limitations of bringing in close relationships, however, include blurred division of labor and authority, overlapping social networks, similar access to financial capital, as well as a propensity to delay difficult conversations and decisions about company matters. Choosing a relational core may limit the functional diversity of a team.

Happy Easter

You just heard Howard Stevensons' definition of entrepreneurship: “the relentless pursuit of opportunity without regard to resources currently controlled.” While that sounds good on paper, the reality is that most of the people working within established organizations feel safer pursuing what is familiar rather than pursuing the unknown. Thus, being an entrepreneurial manager requires a complete shift in mindset. It requires having a notion of ownership, being opportunity-driven, and maintaining a sense of focus and urgency.
