HYDROCARBON OVERFLOWING ALERT
OVERFLOWING CORKED CRUDE OILWELLS IN IBIONO IBOM LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, AKWA IBOM STATE OF NIGERIA
The attention of the Institute of Oil & Gas Research & Hydrocarbon Studies (IOGRHS) has been drawn to the overflowing corked crude oilwells in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria. The reported areas affected by the overflowing crude oil are Ikpanya village, Aka Ikot Udo Eno village, Omu Ekene village and Edem Urua village all in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria.
History recorded that a world class Dutch oil organisation: Shell Petroleum Development company (SPDC) of Nigeria Ltd discovered these oilwells in the past and corked same for inadequacy of commercial quantity, lack of economic viability and investment profitability for full exploration, development and production operations.
A Member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Government of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria, Honourable Moses Essien representating Ibiono Ibom State Constituency, Akwa Ibom State is credited to have interacted with some select Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) working with the Punch Newspaper, Daily Post, Leadership Newspaper etc in Akwa Ibom State calling on the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to conduct on-the-spot assessment of the overflowing crude oil sites for commercial quantity re-evaluation, development and production. The possible commencement of Hydrocarbon production activities in these communities will mitigate economic hazards, avoid humanitarian disturbances, cost of overflowing petroleum hydrocarbon clean-up and, environmental remediation.
The Institute of Oil & Gas Research & Hydrocarbon Studies (IOGRHS) joins Honourable Moses Essien of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Nigeria to encourage and persuade the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources (FMPR) and other connected Government Agencies to articulate activities and deploy relevant mechinery to deal with this matter, especially now that the country is preparing to resume oil and gas operations in the long-dormant Ogoni oilfields in Rivers State, South South Region of Nigeria and, pushing production towards two (2) million barrels per day (MBPD). We do not know whether the Ibiono Ibom overflowing oilwells may contribute to Nigeria's ability to meet the 2026 crude oil production target.
