Piano lessons? Taekwondo? Mad Science? Drama club? These are questions that pop in your mind as the new school term begin, because you would love to involve your child in extra curricular activities to keep their minds engaged. Paying the fee is not a challenge; picking the appropriate activity is.

Extra curricular activities, sometimes called clubs, option extra or extra option, depending on the school, are activities created by schools to help keep the children engaged beyond classroom setting. The activities are designed to teach creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking, all of which are the core of the 21st century skill acquisition. Therefore, parents and school authorities created an atmosphere to give a holistic approach to learning.

‘Extra-curricular activities help students to learn about themselves and develop and use their skills and knowledge in different contexts,’ says Chris Davison, Deputy Director and Careers Adviser with the Careers and Enterprise team at Durham University.

So in deciding what’s best for children, parents are advised to choose activities that are age appropriate, as well as interesting to the child. However, there are some skills as a parent you think would be of great benefit to your child, but may not be of interest to your child, discussing with your child would help achieve a rewarding learning experience.

Now what club or option extra are you picking for your child this term? Remember, whichever you activity you pick, your child’s wholeness is all that matters.
