UNDERSTANDING THE VLBI PROJECT AT CGG TORO

VLBI stands for "Very Long Baseline Interferometry". It is one of the Space Geodesy Techniques for which CGG Toro was established.

Other Space Geodesy Techniques are GNSS (already established at CGG Toro) and Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) which discussion for it's establishment has started.

VLBI is a Space-Geodetic technique based on Radio Astronomy. It is used for:
A. Space Geodesy to:
1. Determine precise coordinates on Earth,
2. Monitor Earth's rotation and orientation
3. Derive various Earth system parameters
4. Determination of plate-tectonic
5. Regional deformation
6. Satellite tracking

B. Radio Astronomy
1. Accurate coordinates of extragalactic radio sources ( quasars )

C. Security
1. Deep-space missions
2. Tracking Earth orbiting satellites.

It is a multi-million dollar project in collaboration with the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory of China.

Attached picture is a sample of what the project is going to be when completed.

After completion, Nigeria will be the second country in Africa with such a Space Geodetic Infrastructure after South Africa, and the only country in the sub-saharan Africa.

Similarly, from our simulation, CGG Toro is "strategically and geometrically" located in relation to other VLBI in the world. Hence, the Global Space Geodetic community is eager to have the CGG Toro Observatory station onboard.

At the local level, CGG Toro will be collaborating with CBSS Nsukka as well NASRDA Engineering Space System Department .
