WHAT IELTS SCORE SHOULD BE MY TARGET SCORE?
Although there is no PASS or FAIL marks with the IELTS, there are slight differences in English proficiency test scores required for different purposes and we shall look at them in 3 broad categories:
IMMIGRATION PROGRAMMES – (especially the Canadian Immigration)
ACADEMIC PURPOSE (Undergraduate, Post-graduate, Non-degree)
PROFESSIONAL PURPOSE (medical practitioners’ employment and permanent residence in the United Kingdom)
IMMIGRATION PROGRAMMES
Immigration programmes especially the Canadian Express Entry, assesses applicants’ English language proficiency along the CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) grading system. Most of the Canadian immigration programmes such as the Federal Skilled Worker and the Canadian Experience, requires a minimum of a CLB 7, while Federal Skilled Trader and Investor programmes may require a minimum of a CLB 5.
The IELTS equivalents of these can be seen in the table below.
CLB
10= Read- 8.0 Write- 7.5 Listen- 8.5 Speak- 7.5
9 = Read-7.0 Write- 7.0 Listen- 8.0 Speak- 7.0
8 = Read-6.5 Write- 6.5 Listen- 7.5 Speak- 6.5
7 = Read-6.0 Write- 6.0 Listen- 6.0 Speak- 6.0
6 = Read-5.0 Write- 5.5 Listen- 5.5 Speak- 5.5
5 = Read-4.0 Write- 5.0 Listen- 5.0 Speak- 5.0
(R-reading, W-writing, L-listening, S-speaking)
Suffice it to say that the higher the score, the better the candidates chance at achieving whatever the purpose for writing the test (especially giving that the cut-off marks for immigration draws keep peaking progressively).
ACADEMIC PURPOSE
Most institutions seem to require a minimum of 6.5 IELTS score while others insist on a 7.0 IELTS score. However, we advise that candidates stay within the bounds of 7.0, especially giving that it is pretty easy to make.
PROFESSIONAL PURPOSE (Medical practitioners)
Having altered the required test from UKVI to IELTS Academic, IELTS overall scores of 7.5 and individual scores of 7.0 for each of the four sections (writing, reading, speaking and reading) is required from interested candidates.
Clearly, these requirements suggest that your English language skills are important to achieving your global goals and so you should be working on them right away.
