Reminiscing On Detergent Wars In Nigeria

There was a time in Nigeria when Omo and Elephant were just about the two leading detergent brands in the market. Things are quite different today, with several brands competing for consumers’ attention and market share. It is difficult to say with certainty who the market leader is.

Back then, Omo had become almost a generic name for detergent and seemed to leave Elephant very little room to breathe, perhaps because of its first-mover advantage and strong brand equity. Both brands invested heavily in television advertising, as well as sales promotions, to grow and defend their market shares. This was at a time when advertising and sales promotion were central to the marketing strategies of major fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies.

Interestingly, even when some consumers wanted to buy Elephant, they would sometimes ask for “Omo,” assuming Omo was simply the generic name for all detergents. That was the strength of the brand.

At some point, Elephant featured the popular comedian Zebrudaya in its television commercials. Zebrudaya was a household name at the time, thanks to his unforgettable role in The New Masquerade sitcom. Yet, even the enormous popularity of Zebrudaya could not dethrone Omo from its market leadership position.

Those were the days. Nigerian advertising agencies were extremely busy and, more importantly, highly creative. We had full-service advertising agencies that handled everything from strategy and creative development to media planning and buying. Today, the industry has become more fragmented, with creative boutiques, specialised agencies and “hot shops” taking on increasingly defined roles.

Technology has also disrupted, democratised and, in some ways, balkanised the advertising profession. Today, someone with a basic understanding of artificial intelligence can create an advert, write the copy, generate visuals, introduce models into a creative concept and even produce something resembling a finished commercial in a matter of minutes.

For advertising practitioners in Nigeria, this technological revolution presents both opportunities and challenges. It has made advertising production faster and more accessible, but it has also raised concerns about the dearth of originality and distinctive creative thinking in the industry.

Gone, perhaps, are the days when creative hotheads like Julia Oku, then of Insight Communications, could craft memorable, award-winning advertising copy such as the famous Vaseline line: “If babies could talk, they would ask for the best.”

That era produced advertising ideas that were not merely advertisements; they became part of popular culture and entered our everyday vocabulary.

The detergent wars of Omo and Elephant therefore offer more than nostalgic memories. They remind us of a time when strong brands, big ideas, aggressive promotions and exceptional creative talent defined Nigeria’s advertising landscape.

Those were indeed the days.

4Clans, Delta Government Partner to Transform Asaba Waterfront into NigerCity Bay

By Dr. Uche Nworah

Members of the organised private sector have reaffirmed their confidence in Delta State as an investment destination, with 4Clans Nigeria Limited, in partnership with the Delta State Government, spearheading plans to transform portions of the Asaba Waterfront into a major economic and urban development hub to be known as NigerCity Bay.

The project is being undertaken through NigerCity Development Company Limited, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) incorporated by 4Clans Nigeria Limited in collaboration with the Delta State Government to develop the proposed mega smart city on the banks of the River Niger.

Speaking at the recently concluded Delta State Economic and Investment Summit 2026 in Asaba, Enugwu-Ukwu, Anambra State-born Ozonkpu Chief Theodore Omalu, a Director of 4Clans Nigeria Limited and NigerCity Development Company Limited, said the NigerCity Bay project was conceived to unlock the enormous economic and development potential of the Asaba Waterfront and the River Niger.

According to him, the project would involve the reclamation and development of underutilised riverfront wetlands into a modern, integrated smart city with residential, commercial, tourism, hospitality, logistics and other economic facilities.

“NigerCity Bay is about unlocking the enormous potential of the River Niger and the Asaba Waterfront. We are not simply reclaiming land; we are creating a new economic frontier for Delta State — one that will generate businesses, attract investment, create jobs and provide opportunities for people to live, work and do business.”

Chief Omalu said the project was a practical demonstration of the summit’s theme, “Harnessing Our Strengths, Unlocking Our Potentials for Accelerated Economic Development.”

He explained that the development would harness the strategic location of Asaba and its proximity to the River Niger to create new land and open up opportunities across several sectors of the economy.

“The River Niger is a tremendous economic asset. If properly harnessed, it can support a whole ecosystem of commerce, tourism, hospitality, logistics, residential development and other businesses. NigerCity Bay is our attempt to convert that potential into tangible economic value.”

The investor disclosed that a dredger had been operating at the project site for about two years, adding that the company had recently invested in an additional modern dredger to accelerate the reclamation and development process.

He described the latest investment as a demonstration of 4Clans Nigeria Limited’s confidence in Delta State, Asaba and the long-term prospects of the NigerCity Bay project.

“Our decision to bring in another modern dredger is a clear statement of confidence. We believe in Asaba, we believe in Delta State and we believe in the long-term viability of NigerCity Bay. This is not a short-term project; it is an investment in the future.”

Chief Omalu said that upon completion, NigerCity Bay would provide opportunities for residential communities, commercial activities, tourism, hospitality, logistics and other businesses, while creating employment and stimulating further investment.

He added that the company’s experience in land reclamation and urban development had provided the technical expertise and institutional confidence required to undertake the ambitious project.

The investor commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his leadership and efforts to create an investment-friendly environment in Delta State. He also acknowledged the support of the Secretary to the State Government, the Chairman of the Delta State Economic Summit Planning Committee, Kingsley Emu, and other stakeholders in advancing the project.

Describing NigerCity Bay as a product of strong public-private partnership, Omalu stressed that sustainable economic development required collaboration among government, investors and host communities.

“Government cannot do everything, and the private sector cannot succeed in isolation. Government provides the enabling environment and policy direction; the private sector brings capital, expertise, innovation and institutional capacity, while host communities provide the local support and partnership that make projects sustainable.”

He therefore urged prospective investors to take a serious look at Delta State, describing the investment opportunities in the state as enormous.

“Delta State has the land, the people, the strategic location and enormous economic potential. What investors need is confidence that their investments will be supported by the right environment. We are seeing that confidence growing, and NigerCity Bay is one example of what is possible.”

It would be recalled that the Delta State Government has classified the broader development programme as the Asaba Waterfront Projects, comprising two major smart-city developments — NigerCity Bay and Asaba Waterfront City.

The projects are being implemented through two separate incorporated Special Purpose Vehicles. NigerCity Development Company Limited is responsible for the development of NigerCity Bay, while a separate SPV has been incorporated to execute the Asaba Waterfront City project.

The development is expected to significantly expand the economic potential of Asaba, attract further private-sector investment, create employment opportunities and position the city as a major destination for modern urban development, tourism, commerce and logistics.

Chief Omalu reaffirmed the commitment of 4Clans Nigeria Limited and its partners to continued investment, job creation, community partnership and contributing to the economic transformation of Delta State.

“NigerCity Bay demonstrates what can happen when government creates the right investment environment and the private sector responds with capital, expertise and perseverance. With the right partnership, we can transform underutilised assets into productive economic infrastructure and create opportunities that will benefit generations to come.”

Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori; Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo; renowned scholar and public intellectual, Prof. Patrick Lumumba; the Ambassadors of Brazil and Malaysia; as well as international investors and other stakeholders.

Charlton Business School Concludes One-Day Executive Business Education Programme in Abuja

Charlton Business School Abuja has successfully concluded another edition of its One-Day Executive Business Education Programme, held at the institution’s city office in Garki, Abuja.

The intensive executive learning session brought together a select group of six entrepreneurs and business executives for a practical, boardroom-style learning experience designed to strengthen business leadership and decision-making.

Unlike conventional classroom training, the Charlton Business School Executive Education Programme is tailored as a boardroom conversation where participants engage in case study analysis, business simulations and interactive discussions on real-life business challenges and opportunities.

Participants explored a wide range of business topics including Nigeria’s Business Landscape, Global Business Landscape, Business Operations, Access to Finance, Digital Marketing, Business Growth Strategies, Emerging Business Trends and Leadership, alongside networking and interactive panel discussions.

Speaking at the close of the programme, the President of Charlton Business School and Lead Facilitator, Dr. Uche Nworah, described the session as another successful investment in building stronger Nigerian businesses.

“Our objective is to create a platform where entrepreneurs learn from real business experiences, challenge ideas and develop practical strategies they can implement immediately. Through case studies and business simulations, participants gain insights that go beyond theory. We encourage more business owners, executives and aspiring entrepreneurs to register for our future Executive Education sessions and become part of this growing learning community.”

One of the participants, Mr. Chuks Ozigbo, a real estate developer, expressed satisfaction with the quality of the programme.

“This was an engaging and refreshing experience. The discussions were practical, relevant and interactive. I particularly appreciated the opportunity to exchange ideas with fellow entrepreneurs while learning from real business case studies. I am leaving with valuable strategies that I can apply immediately in my business, and I look forward to attending future editions.”

Charlton Business School said it will continue to organize regular Executive Education programmes aimed at equipping entrepreneurs, business leaders and professionals with practical knowledge, strategic thinking and leadership skills needed to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving business environment.

One of the highlights of the programme was the presentation of Oma Zobo Blast, a beverage brand, by participant Ofoha Chioma Rosemary. The product became the subject of a lively workshop session, during which fellow participants analyzed its branding, marketing strategy and market potential. They offered practical recommendations on strengthening the brand while commending its distinctive taste, attractive packaging and strong commercial appeal.

The Ikoyi Chapman Brand

The reflection published below by businessman Chima Anyaso is an excellent business case study, demonstrating how entrepreneurs can identify and transform opportunities within their immediate environment into viable commercial ventures.

Chapman is one of Nigeria’s most beloved beverages, enjoyed across homes, restaurants, bars, and social gatherings. What is particularly insightful is how Chima Anyaso and his partners have gone beyond simply appreciating the drink to commercialising it by bottling it for the mass market. This is a classic example of innovation driven by a deep understanding of local consumer preferences.

Traditionally, Chapman has been served as a freshly prepared cocktail in bars and restaurants. By introducing a ready-to-drink bottled version, they are creating convenience while preserving a distinctly Nigerian experience. The choice of the brand name Ikoyi further reinforces its authenticity and premium Nigerian identity.

I hope the brand records tremendous success in the marketplace. From my assessment, I cannot readily identify any indigenous brand currently competing directly in this product category. That first-mover advantage, if well managed through quality, effective distribution, and strong branding, significantly enhances its prospects for market success.

I wish Chima Anyaso and his partners every success as they build what could become another proudly Nigerian consumer brand.

“The Journey of Decades and the Birth of a New Partnership

By Hon. Chima Desmond Anyaso (Ofuji), Chairman, CAADES Group

More than four decades ago, when Mike and Garry Robinson left Nigeria, they carried with them something that could never be packed into a suitcase—the priceless memories of a country that shaped their childhood and left an indelible mark on their lives.

Among those cherished memories was a simple yet remarkable drink called Chapman. More than just a refreshing beverage, it became a symbol of joy, friendship and the unforgettable experiences they shared while growing up in Nigeria. That memory endured through the years, crossing continents and generations.

Yesterday, after more than 40 years, Mike and Garry returned to Nigeria—not merely to revisit the past, but to create a new chapter in history. Together, we signed a landmark trade partnership and distribution agreement to introduce Ikoyi Chapmans to Nigeria and, ultimately, to markets across Africa.

While some may see this as simply another business transaction, yesterday's ceremony represented something far greater. It marked the renewal of longstanding bonds of friendship, family and shared purpose. It demonstrated how meaningful relationships, built over time and across cultures, can inspire innovation, create opportunities and drive transformative change.

What began as a casual first meeting with Mike and Garry has evolved into a lifelong friendship and a strong business partnership. More importantly, it has become a symbol of the enduring relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom—a partnership rooted not only in commercial opportunity but also in mutual respect, shared values and a common vision for the future.

As a token of appreciation and cultural pride, I had the honour of presenting Mike and Garry with the Nigerian Coat of Arms, symbolising the nation whose memories they continue to cherish. They were also presented with traditional Igbo Isi Agu attire, customised crested hand fans bearing their names, traditional beads and the iconic red cap—gifts that reflect our cultural heritage and celebrate a partnership founded on trust, friendship and shared aspirations.

I extend my sincere appreciation to our strategic partner, Dr. Efosa Ogbeide, and to everyone who has believed in and contributed to this vision. I am confident that this partnership will not only create new opportunities for Nigeria but will also contribute significantly to the growth of Africa's beverage industry, fostering innovation, investment and stronger commercial ties across the continent.

This is more than the launch of a beverage.

It is the beginning of a journey that celebrates history, honours friendship, bridges cultures and creates a lasting legacy for generations to come.

British Airways and Norwegian Airlines made a bet that whoever lost at the World Cup had to change their profile picture to the other one for the day.

Norway lost to England so Norwegian Airlines changed their profile picture to that of British Airways.

I like this. Brands can have fun and be lighthearted about their brand promotion.

To agree to such, both brands must first establish that their is a fit in their corporate ethos. Such funny bets may even lead to bigger corporate collabos assuming that there is none in place already.
