James had been searching for a job for nearly eight months after graduating from university.
When he finally received an invitation for an interview, he was overjoyed.
"This is my chance," he told himself.
He prepared his documents, printed extra copies of his CV, and even rehearsed answers to common interview questions.
On the interview day, he arrived at the company on time.
Everything seemed to be going perfectly.
When it was his turn, he greeted the interview panel and confidently answered every question.
The interviewers looked impressed.
Then, as the interview was coming to an end, one interviewer asked,
"Do you have any questions for us?"
James replied carelessly,
"No. I just need this job."
The room became silent.
The interview ended shortly afterward.
A few days later, he received an email informing him that he had not been selected.
Months later, he met one of the interviewers at a career seminar.
Curious, James politely asked why he wasn't chosen.
The interviewer smiled and said,
"You had the qualifications. You answered our questions well. But when we asked if you had any questions for us, your response showed that you hadn't researched the company and weren't genuinely interested in the role. We were looking for someone who was prepared and curious."
That single mistake changed everything.
From that day, James learned to prepare thoroughly before every interview.
He researched companies, asked thoughtful questions, and showed genuine interest in every opportunity.
At his next interview, he confidently asked,
"What opportunities are available for learning and professional growth in your organization?"
The interviewers smiled.
A week later, he got the job.
James realized that success in an interview is not only about answering questions well—it's also about asking the right questions.
