Happy World Diabetes Day..
Theme: Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps
Diabetes (mellitus) is simply a disorder of blood glucose (sugar) level. This may be as a result of genetic disorder or lifestyle and aging.
There are two types of diabetes;
Insulin dependent (type 1) and Non-insulin dependent (type 2).
Type 2 diabetes happens to be the most common which can be related to lifestyle and age. Type 1 diabetes is commonly found among children with family history of diabetes. This is managed by the intermittent supply of insulin injection.
Insulin is a hormone that helps convert excess sugar (glucose)in the body to it's storage form (glycogen). When this hormone is lacking or deficient, there is increase in blood glucose level.
Symptoms may include:
-Dehydration
-Weaknesses of the body
-Ketonuria (presence of ketones in urine)
-blurred vision
- Disturbance in menstruation (female) and reduced libido/sexual drive (male).
Severe cases may lead to blindness, renal/kidney failure, hypertension, congestive heart failure, and neuropathy (mental disorder).
Who can get diabetes?
Ans. Anyone (all ages and sexes).
Can diabetes be treated without insulin?
Ans. Type 2 diabetes can be treated with controlled diet at the early stage.
Is diabetes a communicable disease?
Ans. No, it's a disorder that can be inherited or developed.
Caring for those suffering from the disorder can help them feel happy and strong which in turns, prolong their lifes.
Diabetes can be managed for life time, with proper care and control of it's symptoms.
Finally, prevention is always the best treatment for every disease. Maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle and reduce the risk of developing the disorder.
