I am sure you hear this phrase constantly. This is what it actually means.
Human-in-the-loop means a person is part of the decision and not just watching it happen.
This is not rubber-stamping what the AI already decided. It means someone is actually checking it, with the power to stop it or change it before it affects others.
Here is what that looks like in practice.
A hospital uses AI to flag patients at risk. Human-in-the-loop means a doctor reviews that flag before any treatment changes. The AI tool points, but the doctor decides.
A company uses AI to screen job applications. Human-in-the-loop means the HR looks at who got filtered out, not just who got through. The HR is asking, did we miss someone good because of how this tool was built?
A bank uses AI to score loan applications. Human-in-the-loop means someone can look at a denial and ask, " Does this make sense, or " Did the system get this wrong?
With a human in the loop, there is still a place for judgment, context, and the kind of thinking a model cannot do.
That is the whole idea of making sure a person is still the one who can catch it when it gets something wrong.
This is one of the means we ensure AI is responsibly adopted.
