There is so much confusion nowadays that a person who avoids some haraam things and does some obligatory duties is regarded as being over-strict and stubborn. Undoubtedly this is because the people have deviated from correct understanding of Islam and because they indulge so much in sin and neglect the obligatory duties prescribed in sharee’ah. - Sheikh Saalih al-Munajjid.

حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ مُغِيرَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، قَالَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ أَنَا فَرَطُكُمْ عَلَى الْحَوْضِ، لَيُرْفَعَنَّ إِلَىَّ رِجَالٌ مِنْكُمْ حَتَّى إِذَا أَهْوَيْتُ لأُنَاوِلَهُمُ اخْتُلِجُوا دُونِي فَأَقُولُ أَىْ رَبِّ أَصْحَابِي‏.‏ يَقُولُ لاَ تَدْرِي مَا أَحْدَثُوا بَعْدَكَ ‏"‏‏.‏
Narrated `Abdullah:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I am your predecessor at the Lake-Fount (Kauthar) and some men amongst you will be brought to me, and when I will try to hand them some water, they will be pulled away from me by force whereupon I will say, 'O Lord, my companions!' Then the Almighty will say, 'You do not know what they did after you left, they introduced new things into the religion after you.'"

عن أبي موسى الأشعري –رضي الله عنه- عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه كان يدعو بهذا الدعاء: «اللهم اغفر لي خطيئتي وجهلي، وإسرافي في أمري، وما أنت أعلم به مني، اللهم اغفر لي جِدِّي وَهَزْلِي، وَخَطَئِي وَعَمْدِي ،وكل ذلك عندي، اللهم اغفر لي ما قدمت وما أخرت، وما أسررت وما أعلنت، وما أنت أعلم به مني، أنت الْمُقَدِّمُ وأنت الْمُؤَخِّرُ، وأنت على كل شيء قدير».
[صحيح] - [متفق عليه]

Abu Mūsa al-Ash‘ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate with this dua: "O Allah, forgive my sins, my ignorance, my excess in my affairs, and whatever You are better aware of than myself. O Allah, forgive my sins which I committed seriously or humorously, mistakenly or deliberately, and all of them I have committed. O Allah, forgive my sins of the past and the future, those which I committed secretly or openly, and those which You are better aware of than myself. You alone can make one progress or lag behind, and You alone have the absolute power over everything." - [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
