BASIC NEWS VALUES --Gozie Kendrick (V. C Awendo media college)

So what NEWS?
I feel News is whatever journalists say it is. Certainly not every new discovery, new program, new proposal, new assertion and new thought could be carried in the news media. Yet, loosely speaking, it is all news. And, in actuality, a lot of what is overlooked by journalists every day could be as newsworthy as that which does appear in the news media.
From what events they are aware of, journalists try to choose the most newsworthy to actually present to the public as โ€œnews.โ€ They usually start off with the happenings of the day which, from experience, they presume to be of most importance or of interest to the public.
These stories are also some of the easiest stories to cover with limited staffing. The journalists cover specific "beats," gathering news from crime blotters, government meetings, speeches and press conferences, strikes and rallies, etc.
Sometimes, instead of starting with an event, the journalist will start with an issue. The journalist's reporting of the issue makes it news even if no one other than that journalist has ever thought about it before.
All these explanations go under the umbrella of Finding News !
Another alternative when a journalist needs to find news is to interview an individual and allow him to create the news of the day.
The reporter may have no idea what the person is going to say, but for some reason he suspects the public would be interested in that individualโ€™s opinions and insights.
The individual may be famous, powerful, highly credible or just interesting. But, for whatever reason, the journalist decides that person is news โ€“ almost regardless of what.
And, of course, there are unplanned incidents and major disasters that need to be covered. Some of these fall within one reporter's "beat," but frequently they do not. In some cases multiple reporters must be assigned to cover a major unplanned incident, such as an airplane crash, natural disaster or a governmental crisis.
The same news stories can be approached from many different perspectives. There may be literally millions of people with some expertise who could render a credible opinion.
The reporter must choose. He can take a single source and interview in depth. He can talk to many sources and combine their views into one story. Or he can personally immerse himself into the story โ€“ become part of the news, reporting on what he himself may observe or experience.
He can look at a problem from an industrial, consumer, political, social, scientific or individual perspective. He can review what has happened already, what is happening right now, or what is likely to happen in the future โ€“ near or distant.
So News is a series of events that happen within a given society and are determined by a certain number of factors
Those Factors are called determinants of News.
A mini note:

Basic News Values/ Determinants of News:
Basic news values are considered when determining what should or should not become part of todayโ€™s news
1. TIMELINESS: What is closest to NOW is generally of the most interest. If something is of the too distant past or too distant future, there is little public interest. .
Timeliness is a relative concept, however, relating to what has been reported previously. An important or interesting fact from World War I can be very newsworthy if no one has ever reported it before. On the other hand, a fact about an event yesterday may have lost its newsworthiness because it was reported widely in the news media already
2. PROXIMITY: What is closest to us is generally of the most interest. An accident in our community is of greater newsworthin ess to us than an accident in a city 1,000 miles away. Proximity may be social or cultural, as well as geographic, however. Civil strife in Europe is of more interest to most Americans than civil strife in Africa. One could ask, โ€œIn a news sense, how many Indonesians are equal to one member of my own community? How many Indonesians would have to die to bump a story about a local fatal traffic accident from the front page?โ€
3. HUMOR: We all need some comic relief amid otherwise serious news. News stories with a humorous angle, therefore, are in high demand by consumers and editors.
4. PATHOS: Stories that tug at the heart strings have a special appeal to many news consumers. People like to โ€œfeel.โ€ Crying over someone elseโ€™s problems is better than being bored with oneโ€™s own.
5. LOVE: Tender emotions stirred by children, animals, or an attractive person frequently enhance a storyโ€™s value, similar to pathos.
6. ACHIEVEMENT: Victory or great accomplishment is appealing to news consumers. This is especially so if the consumer feels a part of the achievement. The victory of someone from oneโ€™s own country in the Olympics, for example, is typically of much greater interest than a victory by an athlete from another country. Achievement is a more powerful element when combined with love, pathos, suspense or personal consequence.
7. PROMINENCE: An event involving a prominent person is generally of more interest than a similar event involving someone of little notoriety. By definition, the more prominent a person is, the more people feel they know him personally, that somehow he is a part of their life.
8. SUSPENSE: Stories concerning crime, conflict or survival are often more newsworthy because of the element of suspense. People project themselves into the situation, as they do with a movie thriller or a novel. Such stories are usually never over in a day, but require follow up coverage to say.
9. CURIOSITY: Oddities and unusual happenings appeal to the public's curiosity. But even fairly typical happenings have some degree of curiosity appeal. The human mind wants to understand what is going on around it. This is true with everyday happenings that we may not understand -- something so simple as why the sky is blue. Much greater curiosity is stirred by things for which we have no satisfactory intellectual explanation -- UFOs, ghosts, magic and miracles โ€“ as well as such everyday occurrences as crimes, disasters, crises and essentially everything we call โ€œnews.โ€ Certainly curiosity must be one of the strongest news values.
10. CONSEQUENCE: If there is a stronger news appeal than curiosity, it is probably consequence. We are curious about some strange thing happening on the other side of the world, but we are much more concerned if we think it may affect us. The power of proximity is rooted primarily in consequence.
What is near to us is more likely to affect us than that which is far away and, thus, probably of little personal consequences.
News values are basic human values and emotions .
All communications are influenced by them โ€“ religion, education, art, marketing, entertainment, fiction and even gossip rely on these human appeals.
The difference between a journalist and some other kinds of communicators should be a commitment to truth and its value in our society, the recognition that we ourselves may not know the truth and are subject to our own biases, but a conviction that truth will triumph if given a fair and unbiased forum.
This Crash Course will help you to gather news fairly and effectively and then to prepare the news report professionally.

How to handle an interview' -2

STAGES OF INTERVIEW
1.PRE-INTERVIEW;
*ARRANGE The INTERVIEW ;-
Once you begin to understand the interview, you can make a phone call ๐Ÿ“ฒ to the interviewee to ask for an interview.
Brady, of writers digest suggest that when writers are asking for interview, they should put themselves in the interviewee's position.
Try to meditate on these questions :-
-what will the interview cost him?
-who are you?
-for which publication do you write for?
-How are interviews treated in your publications?
-What will the interview do for him?
-How much time will he loose?

*RESEARCH TOPIC AND DECIDE ON THE ANGLE:-
Once the interview has been arranged, you should start searching for the answers needed in the article. The late Cornelius Ryan, author of the 'longest longest day' wrote that an interview should never be conducted unless, the writer knows at least 60% of the answers in advance.
You should check earlier news clippings on subjects for material which has already been published. This information may form the basis of the follow-up questions to which you can easily find answers.

*WRITE QUESTIONS:-
It's a good idea to avoid putting words in the interviewee's mouth. Questions which begin with or ends with comment such as 'don't You think' or 'Would You say'. These statements generally indicate a thought the writer want to attribute to the source. Such questions indicate to your sources that you have already written the article and just want to attribute him. It also put the interviewee in 'yes or no' answering mood.
An easy way to avoid 'yes or no' response is to write your questions phrased in the five Ws and H (why, where, what, which, when, who and how), format. For example -'what do you think about? ' or 'why is the project so important? '. These questions put the source in a reflective, explanatory mood.

HOW TO HANDLE AN INTERVIEW

As a professional journalists, (whether a writer, reporter, a news caster, a broadcaster, blogger or a content creator) you must take charge of an interview at one point in time for the organization you're working for.

What are you gonna do when called upon at that point in time?,

Of course you wouldn't want to disappoint your organization.

In this post you will the learn the step by step procedure on how to handle an interview efficiently.

First of all let's look at the term 'interview'.

What is an interview?

As a reporter you will need to get first hand information from your source either to prove the credibility of the news story or to enlighten your audience. Then you will need to carryout an interview.

An interview is a conversation in person (or, by extension, over the telephone, Internet etc.) between a journalist and someone whose opinion or statements he or she wishes to record for publication, broadcast etc.
In an interview, the reporter engage in an extensive dialogue with the source who is the interviewee to enlighten and gain information for the audience.

Now that we understand the meaning of the term 'interview', let's look at the stages of interview. With this you will know how to prepare for an interview.
The stages of interview include -
1.Pre-interview
2.The interview
3.Post interview

1.PRE-INTERVIEW -
This is the stage where a reporter prepares for an interview. The pre-interview phrase or stage can be broken down into four parts-

*Learn about the source (interviewee)
*Arrange the interview
*Research topics and decide on the angle.

*LEARN ABOUT THE SOURCE (INTERVIEWEE) -
When given an interview, it's only wise that you should carryout a personal research about the interviewee. In carrying out your research consider the following-
*The personality of the interviewee
*The interviewee's personal achievement and history.
*The interviewee's position in the interview (What questions you feel he!/she can answer).
*Is the source an authority?
*What is the interviewee(s) professional & scholalistic background.
*Hobbies & interest
*What did they know about your subject?
*How would they feel about it (your subject)
You should also carryout a research about the topic you will be discussing. Exactly what you'll need to know about the subject will determine whether the interview is for a news story or a feature.
Try to fit the interview into their schedule, if you're working against a deadline, tactfully explain & ask if there's a time they could fit you into their schedule ๐Ÿ“†. Be prepared to interview early, late or during lunch.
. To be continued...

CONTENT WRITING

WHAT IS CONTENT?

According to Heidi Cohen, Content is high quality, useful information that conveys a story presented in a contextually relevant manner with the goal of soliciting an emotion or engagement.

A good Content should be:

โœ… Highly Useful

โœ… Qualitative

โœ… Informative

โœ… Targeted towards a particular audience.

Contents can be expressed using a variety of formats including text, images, video, audio and/or presentations.
So basically, CONTENT WRITING is simply the presentation of contents in textual (written) form.
It's as simple as that. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿฝ
