Common Arithmetic Symbols: +, -, X, ÷

As an educator, I frequently use basic mathematical symbols when explaining concepts to students. The four most common arithmetic symbols are:

(plus) - indicates addition. Adding two numbers together, e.g. 2 + 3 = 5.

(minus) - indicates subtraction. Subtracting one number from another, e.g. 5 - 2 = 3.

X (multiplied by) - indicates multiplication. Multiplying two numbers together, e.g. 2 X 3 = 6. Some texts use * instead of X.
÷ (divided by) - indicates division. Dividing one number by another, e.g. 6 ÷ 2 = 3. Division can also be written using a slash, e.g. 6/2 = 3.
These four symbols are the foundation of mathematical operations. Understanding them thoroughly is essential before progressing to more advanced concepts. I often start by having students practice using the symbols to solve simple problems, like 2 + 3, 5 - 1, 4 X 2, and 10 ÷ 5. We then build up to slightly more complex problems involving multiple operations, such as (4 + 3) X 2 and 20 ÷ (5 - 2).
With regular practice of these fundamentals, students will gain a firm grasp of basic mathematical operations and the symbols that represent them. Mastery of these symbols and the skills they signify is requisite for future success in mathematics and related fields. Overall, taking the time to fully comprehend these four simple yet crucial symbols will provide a solid base of knowledge upon which students can confidently build.
