MY FIANCĂ RAN AWAY WITH MY CHIEF BRIDESMAID ON OUR WEDDING DAY BY FUNMI AKINTADE AGBURU
(12)
I know that I should have told Lamech that Ayomi was in town and that I was going to see him. But since we were not on talking terms, I felt that it was wise to simply go without letting him know.
Nkechi thought tha it was a bad idea to go and see Ayomi. But Charlotte thinks I need closure. And truly I wanted closure right? Or I wanted to see him again?
Did my heart still beat for Ayomi?
I wasnât sure.
But this question plagued my mind as I drove through the almost empty road of Wuse, until I took the turn that led to Central Area. Ayomi said he had put up at a hotel in Central Hotel and I was going to find it using google map. Since I wasnât familiar with the name.
The car was too quiet for me, I turned on the radio and immediately a song by Nathaniel Bassey came on. It was a song about fire.
I tied to listen in for the lyrics but it was almost as if I was hit with fire in my bones. My insides turned hot and I saw goosebumps appear on my body, tears began to roll down my eyes. I had to look for a place to park my car while I sang the song along with Nathaniel Bassey,
âLet your fire fall, let your river flow, let it burn inside and flow outsideâŚâ
Before long I began to ask the Holy Spirit to align me to his will, there on the spot I rededicated my life to him and just like that I stopped crying and was filled instantly with joy. I almost wanted to turn back to the house but Charlotteâs call stopped me.
âI just had the most amazing encounter with the Holy Spirit! You wonât believe it. I want to turn and return home.â
âLook my dear you need to see Ayomi now. Go and get your closure. So that your mind can be at peace. Ehn? Donât say I didnât tell you o!â
I agreed with Charlotte and continued driving all the way until I got to the hotel.
It wasnât a hotel. It was a fancy guest house. I felt this strong prompting not to go but I went inside anyway. Then I placed a call across to Ayomi.
His voice was still as ticklish as ever. He told me to give the phone to the receptionist and they spoke briefly. I ended the call and the receptionist took me upstairs to a room. I knocked and he answered.
âI canât believe that Iâm seeing you in flesh and bl-â
âI need answers. Start talking Ayo!â I didnât wait to go in before speaking.
âWhy donât you come in first? I have missed you.â
âI didnât come here for that! You either answer me or I leave.â
He got a beep on his phone, he typed a quick message and slid the phone in his pocket.
âJust come in first. I will explain.â He opened the door wider.
I hesitated briefly before walking into the room. It wasnât a small room nor was it too wide. But the room suddenly felt too small with Ayomi being there. Maybe I should have stayed outside the room or maybe I shouldnât have come in the first place.
âDo you want water? Let me get you a glass of water.â
I slapped him across the cheeks almost immediately. It was what I have been meaning to do to him ever since he ran away on our wedding day.
âOuch! What was that for?â
âWhy did you leave? You didnât have the balls to tell me that you made a deal with Lamech right?â
âI am sorry. See babe I needed the money.â
âWho is your babe!â I shook my head. I didnât care if my voice was loud. I just wanted closure. âAnd Godiya?â
âGodiya has always wanted me. She took advantage of me. Iâm sorry.â
I wanted to not accept his lie because there was an aura of a lie about him but maybe it was his face or something I couldnât place my hand on that made me melt into his embrace. I stayed in his embrace for a while and just like that before I knew what was happening, he pushed me on the bed.
He descended on me while I was still wondering what was happening.
Just like that, the bedroom door opened and I saw my husbandâs face. There was a familiar voice that I heard too but I didnât care. I wanted to explain to Lamech that it was a set up.
But he simply shook his head, punched Ayomi in the face and stormed out. That was when I saw who had brought him.
The familiar voice. The traitor!
âCharlotte? What did you do? Wait, why are you even here?â
She hissed and wanted to leave but I pulled her back. That was when Ayomi pulled out a cigarette and lit it. Then he said,
âCharlotte, I want my balance ASAP!â
Charlotte hissed, searched her bag for a mini envelope that looked heavy with cash then tossed it towards Ayomi.
âWait, how did you? What did you do?â
âI took advantage of what you donât want. You donât love your husband nau. So allow people like me to love him. Besides, my husband will soon divorce me.â She rolled her eyes.
My jaw dropped open in surprise. I had called Charlotte my friend! Look what happened?
âYou were my friend! You betrayed me!â
âI was never your friend. You simply forced yourself on me!â She hissed and snatched herself from my hold and left me in the hotel room with Ayomi.
I turned to Ayomi in tears, completely dumbfounded. He just kept looking at me while smoking.
âMy God will judge and punish you Ayomi! You and Charlotte and Godiya! All of you!!!â
âLeave Godiya out of this.â
I gathered my things and stepped out of the hotel. I rushed out of the hotel blindly without checking why I was coming but I recalled falling down and someone calling an ambulance. Then I realized that maybe I have been hit by something.
