THE PATH OF RESPECT & CORRECTION IN ISLAM 🌙
Day 1: Upholding Respect for Scholars and Elders
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Assalāmu ‘alaykum wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh,
To my beloved brothers and sisters among Ahlus-Sunnah in Ebiraland—both young and old:
It is with sincere concern and brotherly love that I address a recurring issue within our community. How long will it take for us to reflect on past occurrences and learn from them? Why do we find it difficult to adopt the Sharī‘ah-compliant approach when addressing the mistakes of scholars and people of knowledge?
Indeed, no human is free from error, except the Prophets. However, Islam has taught us how to correct mistakes—with respect, humility, and wisdom.
📖 Guidance from the Qur’an
Allah سبحانه وتعالى says:
“Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best.”
(Surah An-Nahl 16:125)
This verse reminds us that correction is not through harshness or disrespect, but through hikmah (wisdom) and gentle conduct.
🕋 From the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“He is not from us who does not show mercy to our young ones and respect to our elders.”
(Reported by At-Tirmidhi)
Where then is our respect for those who came before us in knowledge, age, and sacrifice?
🖋 Sayings of the Scholars
Imam Mālik رحمه الله said:
“Learn manners before you learn knowledge.”
And it is reported about the scholars of the past that they would correct one another with such gentleness and sincerity, preserving both the truth and the honor of their brothers.
⚖️ A Call to Reflection
It is painful to witness a situation where:
Elders and scholars are addressed without proper respect
Corrections are made publicly with harshness and pride
The younger generation neglects the sacrifices of those before them
Let us remember: Respect does not mean blind following, but it means maintaining dignity while upholding the truth.

NOT ENSLAVED, BUT LIBERATED

The recent mockery directed at a Niqāb-wearing sister who answered the call to the legal profession reflects a common misunderstanding. Wearing the Niqāb does not prevent a woman from being educated, contributing to society, or pursuing a lawful profession.

Islam honours women by preserving their dignity, modesty, and identity. A believing woman who chooses the Niqāb out of obedience to Allah is not enslaved; rather, she seeks freedom from being valued primarily for her physical appearance or used as a tool for commercial attraction.

Allah says:

﴿وَقُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ...﴾

"And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity..."
(Sūrah An-Nūr 24:31)

And Allah says:

﴿يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُل لِّأَزْوَاجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَاءِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِن جَلَابِيبِهِنَّ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰ أَن يُعْرَفْنَ فَلَا يُؤْذَيْنَ﴾

"O Prophet! Tell your wives, your daughters, and the believing women to draw their outer garments over themselves. That is more suitable so that they may be recognized and not harmed."
(Sūrah Al-Aḥzāb 33:59)

A woman's worth is measured by her faith, character, and righteousness—not by how much of her body is displayed.

May Allah grant all our sisters steadfastness upon modesty and obedience, and guide us all to speak with justice and wisdom.

📖 Judge Me, Not My Religion
If I make a mistake today, correct me with knowledge and sincerity. If I am wrong, judge my actions—not the religion of Islam. Islam is perfect because it is from Allah, but Muslims are human beings who make mistakes.
Allah says:
"Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam." (Qur'an 3:19)
Our disagreements should never turn us into enemies. Allah commands:
"And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided." (Qur'an 3:103)
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"A Muslim is the brother of another Muslim. He does not wrong him nor abandon him." (Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)
When we differ on an Islamic issue, let us return to the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah with wisdom, respect, and humility—not insults, abuse, or blind loyalty to personalities. The truth is more deserving of being followed than any individual.
Imam Malik رحمه الله said: "Everyone's statement may be accepted or rejected except the occupant of this grave," pointing to the grave of the Prophet ﷺ.
May Allah unite our hearts upon the truth, grant us sincerity, and make us among those who listen to advice and follow the best of it.

OBEDIENCE TO ALLAAH IS NOT A TREND—IT IS AN ACT OF WORSHIP

There was a time when Muslim brothers who chose to keep their beards and wear their garments above the ankles in obedience to Allaah and His Messenger (ﷺ) were mocked, ridiculed, and called "old-fashioned" or "extremists."

Today, many of these same styles are embraced when promoted by celebrities, musicians, athletes, or social media influencers. The action is the same, yet people's reactions are different.

As Muslims, our standard is not fashion or public opinion. Our standard is the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah.

Allaah says:

"It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allaah and His Messenger have decided a matter, to have any choice about their affair." (Qur'an 33:36)

The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said:

"Trim the moustache and let the beard grow; be different from the polytheists." (Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)

He (ﷺ) also said:

"Whatever of the lower garment hangs below the ankles is in the Fire." (Sahih al-Bukhari)

A sincere believer does not seek the approval of people before obeying the command of Allaah. The honour of a Muslim lies in following revelation, whether society applauds or criticizes.

May Allaah grant us sincerity, steadfastness upon the Sunnah, and the courage to obey Him above every trend and every opinion.

"Whoever obeys Allaah and His Messenger has certainly achieved a great success." (Qur'an 33:71)

YOUR DIGNITY IS PRICELESS

In a world where quick money is often glorified, it is important to remember that true success is not measured by how much you earn, but by how you earn it.

To every young woman and every young man: your body, honour, and self-respect are not commodities for sale. Temporary financial gain can never replace a lifetime of dignity, peace of mind, and a good reputation.

Before making any decision, ask yourself: "Will I be proud to tell my future children how I earned my livelihood?"

The internet has a long memory. What is applauded today can become a source of regret tomorrow. Choose a path that brings lasting honour rather than temporary applause.

As Muslims, Allah ﷻ says:

"And do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction." (Qur'an 2:195)

And the Prophet ﷺ said:

"Modesty is part of faith." (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

Invest in education. Learn a valuable skill. Build a lawful business. Work with excellence. Earn through what is halal, and trust that Allah is the Best Provider.

May Allah ﷻ preserve our honour, guide our youth, bless us with halal sustenance, and make us among those who value faith over fleeting worldly gain. Āmīn.
