I am motivated by the conviction that even the best status quo education is not serving current needs of students in Nigeria - Akakabota Ogaga, Co-Founder/Convener, National Education Summit and Awards

A 21st century education is about giving students the skills they need to succeed and become valuable in this new world, and helping them grow the confidence needed to practice those skills.

With so much information readily available to them, 21st century skills focus more on making sense of that information, sharing and using it in smart ways. Four skills have been identified for 21st century learning which includes Creativity, Critical thinking, Communication and Collaboration.

These four themes are not to be understood as units or even subjects, but as themes that should be overlaid across all curriculum mapping and strategic planning. They should be part of every lesson in the same way as literacy and numeracy.

Creativity is about thinking through information in new ways, making new connections and coming up with innovative solutions to problems. Critical thinking is about analyzing information and critiquing claims. Communication is understanding things well enough to share them clearly with other people. Collaboration is about teamwork and the collective genius of a group that is more than the sum of its parts.

There are other skills that are important, which fall within these four areas. Entrepreneurship can be considered a skill of its own. Inquiry and problem solving are key. Emotional intelligence (EQ) is one of the most important keys to successful work and relationships. The bottom line? Education needs to be all about empowering students with transferable skills that will hold up to a rapidly changing world, not prescribed content that has been chosen for its past relevance.

This theme will be discussed in detail at the 2022 National Education Summit and Awards. More details on https://lnkd.in/dxsWjJtE.

HAPPY 61ST INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY NIGERIA
🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬

On behalf of the management and advisory board of the National Education Summit and Awards, we congratulate all Nigerians on the occasion of her 61st independence anniversary celebration.

As a nation it calls for a time to reflect on the labors of our heroes past, their sacrifices and the investments that have brought us this far. It’s a time to look beyond the differences that set us apart and forge ahead with a new vision that brings us together.

As a nation we are faced with diverse challenges that threaten our co-existence. Education being the core of sustainable human and capital development of any society also faces numerous challenges in Nigeria ranging from poor funding, poor governance, corruption, lack of responsibility and control, politicization of education, lack of infrastructure, indiscipline, poor parenting and guidance and a host of others.

No better time for us as influencers of education in Nigeria to renew our commitment to quality and excellence in the discharge of our duty at any capacity we represent, reigniting hope for a better and prosperous nation.

At the National Education Summit and Awards, we are firm believers in the unity of Nigeria; we uphold the motto of our beloved nation to promote “Unity and Faith” “Peace and Progress” through our advocacy for excellence and quality in education at all levels.

We mark our nations’ 61st independence anniversary with the theme: “UNITY IN DIVERSITY”.

We are a nation diverse in our cultures, beliefs, lifestyle, language, norms, values and religion, yet a people of unity, hope, love, faith, peace and progress.

Let’s celebrate together.

It's International Literacy Day!

Without urgent action & investment in education, our children cannot compete on the global stage. We must act now & avoid a learning crisis.

Beyond literacy and numeracy, our education must focus on learning about our environments and on new approaches to sustainability. The education of the 21st century should include learning to co-exist among one another on the basis of respect, equal dignity and cultural literacy.
