My Biggest Teaching Mistake(confession time)

I need to confess something that's been heavy on my heart.

5 years ago, I thought I was helping children learn to read. But I was actually making them hate books.

Every day, I would drill them: "Read faster! Sound it out this way! Try again!"

Little Favour would cry during reading time.
Adaku would hide when I brought out books.
Uche would say "Teacher , I don't know how to do anything" when he couldn't read a word.

I was breaking their spirits in the name of education.

Then one day, Favour looked at me and said, "Teacher, I don't want to read anymore. It makes me feel bad"

My heart broke.

That night, I cried. I realized I was so focused on making them read “correctly” that I forgot to make them LOVE reading.

The next day, I changed everything.

Instead of drilling, I started telling stories. Instead of corrections, I started celebrating small wins. Instead of pressure, I brought in a play method.

3 months later, those same children were fighting over who would read first!

The lesson?
Children need to fall in love with stories before they can fall in love with reading.

Parents and teachers - are we creating readers or are we creating fear?
