This year, I was nominated by my University as one of the proctors for the 2026 JAMB examination. Being my first time, I was taken aback by some of the anomalies that I observed among the candidates. I will touch on only one.
COMPUTER ILLITERACY
Perhaps the most disappointing thing for me was the inability of most of the candidates to use the computer. These are teenagers who likely have smartphones and have started using the social media. I had to explain and practically demonstrate how to use the mouse and the keyboard to them. Still, most of them didn't get it correctly because it was probably their first experience. A particular candidate told me, "Sir, the mouse is not working." When I asked her to show me how she has been using it, she raised it up and started moving it in the air 😆.
Last week, JAMB organized a mock examination for candidates, but unfortunately, the majority of them didnt participate in it. The mock examination served two purposes. One is to train them on how to handle the computer for the purpose of examination, while the other was to make them familiar with JAMB questions and how to approach them. I believe that those who attended the mock examination will have no challenge whatsoever with the real examination. Some of the candidates were logged out of the examination after their time expired. A particular candidate spent over an hour on just one subject and mistakenly ended the examination, leaving the remaining subjects unattended to. Both candidates cried their eyes out, but what can one do?
COMPUTER LITERACY
As parents, I think that it's important to make the computer literacy of our children a personal project before they finish secondary school. That your children can operate a smartphone doesn't mean that they can use a computer. Get them a computer set or a laptop, and teach them how to use it, including surfing the web.
