Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta

Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta About FUNAAB This led to the creation of the first two Universities of Agriculture in Abeokuta and Makurdi.

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State (FUNAAB) was established on January 1, 1988 by the Federal Government when four Universities of Technology, earlier merged in 1984, were demerged. On the same date, Professor Nurudeen Olorun-Nimbe Adedipe was appointed the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the University. Professor Adedipe officially assumed duty on January 28, 1988. For many years the date which Professor Adedipe assumed duty was wrongly adopted as the foundation day of the University. Following a revisit to the instrument setting up the University, a Council decision at its 53rd Statutory meeting in June 2010 reverted the foundation date to January 1st 1988 as prescribed by the law which established the University. Prior to the emergence of UNAAB, the Federal Government had established the Federal University of Technology, Abeokuta (FUTAB) in 1983. Then, in 1984, it was merged with the University of Lagos and had its name changed to the College of Science and Technology, Abeokuta (COSTAB), before the demerger of January, 1988. The University started off from the old Campus of Abeokuta Grammar School, Isale-Igbein near the city centre. It completed its movement to its Permanent Site along Alabata Road in 1997, in what has been termed the fastest pace of Permanent Site development in the history of Nigerian University System.

FUNAAB, INCSAN Deepen Partnership to Drive Nigeria’s Cassava Revolution

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has intensified its partnership with the Industrial Cassava Stakeholders Association of Nigeria (INCSAN) to unlock the agricultural, industrial and economic potential of cassava and position the crop as a stronger driver of food security, youth employment and national development.

The Vice-Chancellor of FUNAAB, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, stated this on September 10, 2026, when he received the leadership of INCSAN, resource persons and participants of a cassava training programme at the University.

Prof. Kehinde emphasised that Nigeria’s position as one of the world’s leading cassava-producing countries must translate into increased productivity, value addition, industrial utilisation and improved livelihoods for farmers and other stakeholders across the value chain.

He commended INCSAN, particularly Dr. Lawrence Kehinde, for strengthening collaboration with the University, noting that the partnership had gained further momentum following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FUNAAB and INCSAN in September 2025.

From Research to the Farm

As a practical demonstration of the growing partnership, the Vice-Chancellor disclosed that FUNAAB had provided land to INCSAN for the establishment of a demonstration and training base.

He described the initiative as a strategic platform for translating agricultural research, knowledge and innovation into practical solutions on the farm, assuring the Association of the University’s continued support through its land, expertise and personnel.

According to him, unlocking the full potential of the cassava value chain requires a united front involving government agencies, research institutions, private-sector organisations, development partners, farmers, extension personnel and other relevant stakeholders.

He therefore called for sustained knowledge-sharing, training and mentoring, particularly for young farmers and professionals, to accelerate the adoption of improved cassava production practices, technologies and business models.

FUNAAB as a Hub for Cassava Innovation

Prof. Kehinde described FUNAAB as a natural hub for agricultural innovation, stressing that the University's multidisciplinary expertise provides a strong foundation for addressing challenges across the cassava value chain.

He highlighted the contributions of specialised disciplines including Crop Protection, Soil Science, Plant Physiology, Plant Breeding and Horticulture, among others, noting that their combined expertise could provide innovative and sustainable solutions to cassava production, processing and enterprise development.

The Vice-Chancellor further linked FUNAAB’s cassava development agenda to the University's broader commitment to entrepreneurship, employability and job creation.

He noted that FUNAAB graduates approximately 4,000 students annually and is strengthening entrepreneurship and career-development initiatives to prepare graduates not only to seek employment but also to create enterprises and take advantage of emerging opportunities in agriculture and agribusiness.

Youth Empowerment at the Centre

Prof. Kehinde charged the organisers of the training programme to make youth empowerment a central component of the initiative by exposing participants to opportunities across the cassava value chain.

He identified cassava seed production, cultivation, processing, marketing and enterprise development as areas with significant potential for youth participation, income generation and job creation.

The Vice-Chancellor also acknowledged the contributions of key stakeholders and development partners, including the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA), National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC), National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), PROSSIVA, agricultural extension personnel and other organisations supporting cassava development in Nigeria.

Building a Sustainable Cassava Economy

Prof. Kehinde expressed confidence that the expanding FUNAAB-INCSAN partnership would deliver measurable impact in cassava production, research and innovation, skills development and enterprise creation.

He reiterated FUNAAB’s readiness to collaborate with stakeholders across the agricultural ecosystem to transform Nigeria’s cassava advantage into sustainable opportunities for food security, youth empowerment, employment generation, industrial development and agricultural prosperity.

The partnership further reinforces FUNAAB’s commitment to translating research and innovation into practical solutions that contribute to national development and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

FUNAAB, INCSAN Partner to Train Young Cassava Seed Entrepreneurs

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), in collaboration with the Industrial Cassava Stakeholders’ Association of Nigeria (INCSAN) and other development partners, has commenced a four-day Technical, Leadership and Business Training Programme for Young Cassava Seed Entrepreneurs, aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s cassava seed system and developing a new generation of agribusiness professionals.

The programme, which commenced on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at the Career Service and Linkages Unit (CLSU), FUNAAB, will run until Friday, September 11, 2026. It is designed to equip about 100 graduate farmers with the technical, entrepreneurial and leadership competencies required to establish, manage and grow profitable cassava seed enterprises.

INCSAN, FUNAAB Deepen Partnership on Cassava Seed Production

Speaking at the Opening Ceremony, the President of INCSAN, Mr. Segun Ladele, described the Association as a non-profit organisation registered under Nigerian law in July 2016 to provide a platform for collaboration, conventions and coalitions among stakeholders in Nigeria’s industrial cassava sector.

Mr. Ladele acknowledged the contributions of IDH (The Sustainable Trade Initiative) in convening stakeholders and supporting the establishment and development of INCSAN, noting that the organisation had continued to benefit from its support since inception.

He disclosed that INCSAN had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with FUNAAB for the establishment of a 25-hectare cassava seed multiplication farm, describing the initiative as a significant intervention towards strengthening the country’s cassava seed system and advancing the cassava value chain.

According to him, the initiative is being implemented in collaboration with major development and research institutions, including the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA), IITA GoSeed, National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC) and PROSSIVA.

Training Combines Theory with Practical Field Experience

Mr. Ladele explained that the four-day training combines classroom instruction with practical field demonstrations facilitated by experts from the collaborating organisations.

The approach is designed to provide participants with hands-on knowledge and practical skills that can be directly applied to cassava seed production, farm management and enterprise development.

Training sessions cover key areas including the fundamentals of establishing a certified cassava seed business, Good Agronomic Practices for cassava seed farm management, strategies for developing profitable cassava seed enterprises, leadership and customer management.

Trainees Challenged to Strengthen Cassava Value Chain

The INCSAN President urged participants to maximise the opportunity by acquiring the technical, business and leadership competencies required to build sustainable enterprises.

He stressed that their responsibilities would extend beyond establishing individual businesses, noting that the trainees could play a strategic role in strengthening Nigeria’s broader cassava value chain.

Mr. Ladele particularly identified the shortage and distribution gap affecting access to newly improved cassava varieties as an area where the emerging entrepreneurs could make a significant difference.

He noted that the trainees could help facilitate the distribution of quality cassava planting materials to smallholder farmers, particularly those in rural communities across Nigeria.

Building the Next Generation of Cassava Entrepreneurs

The training programme is expected to contribute to the emergence of a new generation of technically competent cassava seed entrepreneurs capable of producing and distributing quality planting materials.

By strengthening the skills of young farmers and connecting them with technical, research and industry expertise, the initiative is positioned to contribute to increased agricultural productivity, improved livelihoods, employment creation and sustainable growth within Nigeria’s cassava sector.

The FUNAAB-INCSAN collaboration further highlights the importance of partnerships among universities, research institutions, development organisations and industry stakeholders in developing practical solutions to agricultural challenges and building a resilient food system.

Ultimately, the programme represents an important investment in youth agribusiness development, agricultural innovation and Nigeria’s cassava value chain, with the potential to improve access to quality planting materials and strengthen the productivity of cassava farmers nationwide.
