WHEN LOVE FAILS - FINAL PART

Richard didn’t think twice.
He grabbed his keys and rushed out into the humid Port Harcourt night, his heart pounding like a talking drum.

“God, abeg… not my children… not Mary…” he muttered as he sped through the road.
The unknown caller sent a location.

A private hospital.
Not a good sign.
When Richard arrived, the smell of antiseptic hit him immediately. Nurses moved quickly. The tension in the air was heavy.
He walked to the reception.

“My name is Richard… I got a call—about Mary.”
The nurse looked at him for a moment… then sighed.
“Please… come with me.”
That sigh alone was enough to shake him.
As they walked down the corridor, Richard’s mind raced.

What kind of trouble? Accident? Kidnapping?
Nothing prepared him for what he was about to hear.

They stopped at a door.
The nurse turned to him gently.

“Are you her husband?”
Richard hesitated… then nodded slowly.

“Yes.”
The nurse lowered her voice.

“She was brought in unconscious… from a hotel.”
Richard’s stomach dropped.

“A hotel?”
The nurse continued.

“She wasn’t alone. The man she was with abandoned her and ran away.”
Richard closed his eyes tightly.
Pain.
Anger.
Shame.
All at once.

“But that is not the worst part,” the nurse added.
Richard opened his eyes.

“What do you mean?”
The nurse looked around, then leaned closer.

“She has been poisoned.”
Silence.
Complete silence.
Richard felt the world tilt beneath him.

“Poisoned…?” he whispered.
“Yes. We suspect it was intentional.”

Richard staggered backward, holding the wall for support.
All the men.
All the lies.
All the betrayal.
And now this.

“Can I see her?” he asked weakly.
The nurse nodded.
Inside the room, Mary lay still. Tubes connected to her body. The once proud, arrogant woman was now lifeless and pale.
Richard walked closer slowly.

This was not the woman who shouted at him.
This was not the woman who mocked his sacrifices.
This… was someone broken.
He sat beside her.
For a long time, he said nothing.
Then finally—

“Mary… why?”
Tears fell quietly.

“You destroyed everything… our home… our children… me…”
He paused.

“But I still came.”
His voice cracked.

“I don’t even know why…”
Just then, Mary’s fingers twitched.
Richard froze.
Her eyes slowly opened.
Weak.
Confused.
Then she saw him.

“Ri… Richard…” she whispered.
Tears rolled down her face immediately.

“I… I didn’t think you would come…”
Richard looked at her, his face unreadable.

“You didn’t think… after everything?”
Mary began to cry harder.

“They lied to me… the men… the lifestyle… I thought I had found freedom…”
She coughed painfully.

“But they only used me…”
Richard remained silent.

“They wanted my money… my business… everything you built…” she continued weakly.

“I lost it all… the shop… the respect… everything…”
She struggled to breathe.

“That man… he poisoned me when I refused to give him the last money I had…”
Silence filled the room.
The truth was ugly.
Brutal.
Mary reached out weakly, holding Richard’s hand.

“I was foolish… ezigbo foolish…” she whispered.

“I forgot who stood by me… I forgot my home…”
She looked into his eyes desperately.

“Please… forgive me…”
Richard’s heart tightened.
This was the moment.
Revenge… or redemption.
He looked at her for a long time.
Then slowly… he removed his hand from hers.

Mary’s face fell.
Tears streamed uncontrollably.

“I deserve it…” she whispered.
“I deserve everything…”
Richard stood up.

For a moment, it seemed like he was going to walk away.
Leave her.
Just like she left him.
But then…
He stopped.
Without turning, he spoke.

“I won’t revenge you.”
Mary looked up, shocked.

“I won’t destroy you… life has already done that.”
He turned slightly.

“But forgiveness…” he paused.
“…is something you will have to earn.”

Mary broke down completely.
“Please… don’t leave me…”
Richard sighed deeply.

“I’m not staying

The whispers started quietly.
At first, Richard ignored them.

“Your wife… she is always seen with one man like that,” a neighbor hinted.
Richard laughed it off.

“My Mary? Impossible.”
But deep inside, a seed of doubt had been planted.
Mary became more distant.
Phone always on silent.
Late nights became normal.
Respect? Gone.

One evening, Richard decided to visit her shop unannounced.
As he approached, he saw something that made his heart skip.
Mary was laughing.
Not the usual laugh she gave at home.
This one was soft… intimate.
And she was not alone.

A well-dressed man leaned close to her, whispering into her ear. Mary touched his arm playfully.
Richard froze.
His chest tightened.
He didn’t enter.

He walked away slowly like a man who had just lost something he couldn’t replace.
That night, he confronted her.

“Who is that man?”
Mary didn’t even flinch.

“Which man?” she replied coldly.
“The one at your shop!”
She hissed.

“You are now monitoring me?”
“Mary!” Richard’s voice broke. “After everything I have done—”

“Stop it!” she shouted. “I didn’t ask you to do anything!”

Silence filled the room.
Richard felt like a stranger in his own house.
Days later, things got worse.
Different men.
Different stories.
Different lies.

Mary was no longer hiding it.
One night, Richard returned home earlier than usual.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.

As he walked into the bedroom…
He heard a voice.
A man’s voice.
Coming from inside.
Richard’s hands began to shake as he slowly pushed the door open…

“Not what I think?” he said slowly. “In my own house?”
Tears rolled down his face.

“I trained you… I built you… I gave you everything…”
Mary’s expression hardened.

“And so what?” she replied. “Must I remain tied to you forever?”
That sentence pierced deeper than any knife.
Richard staggered backward.

In that moment, he realized something painful:
The woman he sacrificed everything for… no longer existed.
Days later, the house became silent.
No laughter.
No warmth.
Just distance.
Then one morning, Mary packed her things.

“I’m leaving,” she said.
“For who?” Richard asked quietly.
She didn’t answer.
She just walked away.

Leaving behind a man… a father… a heart that no longer knew how to beat the same.
But as Richard sat alone that evening, staring into nothingness, his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He hesitated… then picked up.

“Hello?”
A female voice spoke.
“Is this Richard?”
“Yes… who is this?”

There was a pause.
Then the voice said something that made his blood run cold—

“Your wife… Mary… is in serious trouble.”
Richard stood up instantly.

“What do you mean?!”
The line went silent.
Call ended.
And just like that…
A new storm had begun.
