OOPOLY Immortalises Former Acting Rector As Okoro Credits Seamless Leadership Transition To Teamwork
The Management of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, has immortalised its immediate past Acting Rector, Engr. Mrs. Chidinma Martha Ndukwe, by naming the institution's newly retrofitted auditorium after her in recognition of her service to the Polytechnic.
The decision was announced during a retirement reception held after the institution's monthly Academic Board meeting, where the Polytechnic community also presented her with cash gifts, office equipment and commendation messages in appreciation of her years of service.
Rector of the Polytechnic, Engr. Dr. Christopher Okoro Kalu, said the honour symbolizes the institution's appreciation of a leader whose cooperation eased the transition of administration when he assumed office in March 2024.
According to him, Ndukwe ensured there was no vacuum in institutional leadership by making available every document and administrative detail required for a smooth handover.
"For one day, she did not withhold any information from me," the Rector said, adding that the cordial working relationship they shared remains a model of institutional teamwork.
He maintained that enduring institutions are built on cooperation rather than individual accomplishments, noting that every achievement recorded by the present administration has been driven by collective effort across the Polytechnic.
Beyond the recognition, the Management presented the former Acting Rector with a complete set of office equipment to support her retirement activities, while staff, academic units and professional bodies within the institution made separate cash presentations in her honour.
The Polytechnic also announced a ₦2 million retirement gift.
Among those who paid tributes were the Student Affairs Division, the outgoing Students' Union Government, the School of Science and Industrial Technology (SSIT), the School of Mass Communication, Media and Legal Studies (SMCM&LS), the School of Engineering Technology (SET), the School of Environmental Design and Technology (SEDT), the School of Management and Business Technology (SMBT), the General Studies Department (GNS), the Centre for Continuing Education (CCE), the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Chief Lecturers, Item Representatives, the Polytechnic Fellowship (Chapel of Mercy) and members of Management, all of whom acknowledged her years of service to the institution.
The event was attended by the Chief Executive Officer of Shagas Group of Companies, Mr. Ugochukwu Shaga, and members of his delegation, who were on campus ahead of the Shagas Cup final.
Responding, Engr. Ndukwe expressed gratitude for the honour, saying she never imagined the institution would celebrate her retirement on such a scale.
She recalled praying for God to raise a Rector who would attract greater government attention to the Polytechnic, adding that she believes the institution has continued to attract greater government attention under the administration of Engr. Dr. Christopher Okoro Kalu.
"What I said casually has left me in awe. I never expected the Polytechnic to honour me in this manner. My name will remain part of this institution because you all made it possible," she said.
Engr. Ndukwe was appointed Acting Rector on June 5, 2023, becoming the first woman to head the institution. She served until March 18, 2024, when Engr. Dr. Christopher Okoro Kalu was appointed substantive Rector.

One Hundred Distinction OOPOLY Graduates Receive ₦1 Million Grant Each
One hundred graduates of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, who graduated with distinction in their various programmes have received ₦1 million each under the Abia State Government's Graduate Empowerment Grant Scheme.
The beneficiaries constitute the second set of exceptional graduates from the institution to benefit from the grant since the appointment of the Rector, Engr. Dr. Christopher Okoro Kalu.
During the last convocation ceremony held in December 5th, 2025, Abia State Governor Alex Otti said the entrepreneurship grant, introduced across tertiary institutions in the state, would provide exceptional graduates with the financial support to establish businesses, create jobs and contribute to Abia's economic growth.
The Governor stated:
"Our aim is to ultimately create a system that empowers the young people in the State to be part of our development journey, supporting project ex*****on in road infrastructure, housing, electricity, public water supply and more.
“The days of letting our best and brightest brains wander off after graduation and begin to struggle in far-off corners of the world without support are gone.
“The message to students in all our tertiary institutions is clear: do your best and we shall offer you further material leverage to find genuine success right here in Abia."
Before the disbursement, the institution, in collaboration with the Abia State Government, organised a one-day entrepreneurship and business start-up workshop under the auspices of Dr. Alex Chioma Otti's Graduate Empowerment Grant Scheme at the ICT Auditorium.
Addressing the participants, the Rector, Engr. Dr. Christopher Okoro Kalu, said the workshop was organised to prepare the beneficiaries for the responsible use of the grant through entrepreneurship and business development.
He urged them to invest the funds in ventures capable of creating value and generating sustainable income.
He also applauded Governor Alex Otti as a divine gift to the people of Abia, saying, "His Excellency is a Think, Talk and Do Governor, an intentional leader indeed."
The workshop attracted the Honourable Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Eme Uche Eme, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, and other senior government officials.
As part of the training, the Rector invited the Vice Chairman of the Abia State Technological Skills Acquisition Centre and Co-Founder of Jefapris Resources Nigeria, Engr. Cletus Ekpo, to deliver a lecture on vocational skills and entrepreneurship, while Barr. Vitalis Anopue spoke on the legal procedures for establishing a business, including registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
Prof. Eme, in her speech, urged the beneficiaries to invest the grant wisely.
"It's not for hair or for pride; it's for innovation and the creation of things that will take you beyond here. If you do well after the next six months, the state government will support you the more."
She also commended the Rector for elevating the institution's profile and assured him of the ministry's continued support as Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic advances its relocation to the Osisioma Campus.
At the close of the workshop, the beneficiaries received their ₦1 million grants, fulfilling the Abia State Government's promise to provide outstanding graduates with start-up capital for business development.
