Autism traits many people don’t realize are possible autism traits.

Autism is a pattern of differences and not just one or two things. Everyone will likely have something in common with autistic people, but it becomes more likely to be Autism when there’s a pattern of differences.

I put some obvious and not obvious traits in this one…. Did any surprise you?

Autism a constellation of characteristics, and not just 1-2 things. The DSM requires several differences from the top rows (social communication) AND differences from the bottom rows (interests, routines, and/or sensory processing). Most educational eligibility (in the schools) require differences in each color.

Traits change over time and many autistic kids make progress- which is why considering history of these traits is also helpful when considering a diagnosis in older kids or adults.

Autism in girls can be easy to miss.

Not because the differences aren’t there — but because they can look very different from the picture many people still have of autism.

A girl may be sociable, imaginative, have friendships and cope well at school, while underneath she is masking, constantly analysing social situations, managing sensory overload and holding everything together until she gets somewhere safe.

For some girls, Mum becomes that safe person — the one place they can stop performing, unravel and regulate.

None of these signs alone mean a girl is autistic. But when several patterns sit together, it may be worth looking a little more closely.
