Windhoek International School

Windhoek International School An International Community of Learners Windhoek International School (WIS) was founded in December 1990, the year in which Namibia achieved independence.

We opened our doors to our first students in January 1991 and in 2020 we proudly celebrated our 30th birthday. The school was founded to serve the needs of the children of the international community in Namibia and of those Namibian families who are attracted by the unique international character of the school and who share its philosophy and objectives. It is a not-for-profit entity governed by a

volunteer Board. We moved to our present spacious campus in 1994 and have steadily added facilities. We have also grown. What began as a small school in 1991 today enrols more than 500 students aged from 3 to 18 and employs nearly 80 teachers and other educational specialists from twenty countries. We have been an IB World school since the 1990s, offering the PYP and IB Diploma. In fact, WIS is the only IB school in Namibia. Since 2008 the school has also offered IGCSE courses to our students in Grade 9 and 10. Between the PYP and IGCSE all students benefit from the Cambridge Secondary 1 Checkpoint programme. With the PYP, Checkpoint, IGCSE and IB Diploma, all of our students are following internationally recognised courses with external validation. The school is fully accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Our last full accreditation visit was in 2010. In 2015 we successfully passed our five-year review. The language of instruction is English and we also offer French, German and Portuguese. The school is proud of its inclusive ethos. We see diversity as a strength and WIS is without doubt the most diverse community of learners in Windhoek.

On Tuesday evening, our amazing students and their talented educators performed a range of songs and dances, and served as emcees, at the Chinese Embassy's People-to-People Culture Fair. It was great to see our students capably take on leadership roles hosting and performing at a grand event -- celebrating Chinese and Namibian cultures through dance, story, and song. What a wonderful world!

In his book "The Anxious Generation", Jonathan Haidt articulates why children need adventurous close-to-nature playgrounds and a play-based childhood for their healthy development. The WIS campus is close to nature, and we are continuously improving our playgrounds so that they are designed for creative play. When the Grade R students' playground recently required repair, Mr Romondo and the maintenance team put in some extra effort to ensure that it was fixed properly--and our 5-year-old students then shared this message of thanks for their recently uplifted and very special corner of the campus.

πŸŽ“ Where will WIS take you?

Our WIS Class of 2026 is beginning an exciting new chapter this week, with students heading to universities across the Northern Hemisphere. Meanwhile, our Southern Hemisphere students are embarking on service and work placements as they prepare for their university journeys beginning in January and February.

A WIS education prepares learners for success at leading universities around the worldβ€”but university acceptance is only part of the journey. A WIS education develops internationally minded young adults who are curious, compassionate, capable, and people of integrity.

We are proud of the Class of 2026 and excited to see where their WIS journeys take them next. 🌎

Thinking about whether WIS might be the right fit for your child? We would love to hear from you. Contact Ms Christelien Jarman at [email protected] to schedule a call or a campus visit.
