Mix resettlement is situated in Windhoek’s rural constituency and is home to approximately 20 000 inhabitants. Heiner Hambardt Mix Pre-primary and After of School Centre project is immediately adjacent to the main tarred road between Windhoek and Okahandja about 23km from Windhoek. This settlement was owned by a German citizen named Mr. Heiner Hambardt Mix. In 1981 a group of people from a Bonday Crusher Camp owned by a road constructor, closed down. The group then approached Mr. Mix to ask for accommodation and settlement. Mix received the first group of thirty (30) women with their children and offered them employment of watering and working in his garden as well as accommodation on his farm. Later, the rest of the people who remained behind joined the women at the farm. They were about 5 000, as well as other people from surrounding farms that had no place to stay, therefore he accommodated them all and they still all remained there until today. He was one of the few who accommodated Swapo soldiers undercover at his farm during the liberation struggle, He worked together with his comrades and friends, Mr Immanuel Mwatara and Mr Josua Nkomo. In 1999, Mr. Mix unfortunately passed on at the age of sixty (60). He was born in 1939. It is from this background that we honoured him by naming our pre-school after him. At Mix informal settlement there are no infrastructural buildings, no school, no clinics and neither electricity. The nearest primary school are Fidel Castro Primary School, Frans Indongo Primary School, Bet-el Primary School, People’s Primary School and Tobias Hainyeko Primary School which are 23 kilometres far for children to walk to. Why is Heiner Hambardt Mix Pre-Primary and After School Centre different? Poverty is a complex issue that affects entire communities. That's why when you support a child with Heiner Hambardt Mix Pre-Primary and After School Centre we make sure that you help the wider community and not just one individual. Your donation goes towards supporting both your child and non-sponsored children. We then work with the school community to find solutions to the unique challenges they face, and your child will report back to you on behalf of their classmates. Traditional one-to-one child sponsorship can create jealousy among non-sponsored children, and in some cases lead to bullying. However Heiner Hambardt Mix Pre-Primary and After School Centre puts child welfare first, and we ensure that every child in the community benefits from your support in a practical and ethical way. Location:
Mix Primary School is located in a poor rural area of Windhoek, Namibia. Mix was identified for support in 2010 when Heiner Hambardt Mix Pre-Primary and After School Centre staff went to the school and saw that the conditions were extremely poor. The classrooms were unsafe for the children to learn in with earthen floors, no windows and leaking roofs. With the help of our supporters over the last four years we have been able to address some of these issues at the school through the construction of permanent classrooms and hygienic toilets. We have also worked with the School Management Committee and teachers to improve teaching and learning at the school through workshops and training. However, with an increasing number of children enrolling in the school, there are still challenges at Heiner Hambardt Mix Pre-Primary and After School Centre that need to be addressed to cater for all these children. The challenge
There are 435 children at Mix resettlement and 24 of these are in Early Childhood Development (ECD), the pre-school class. Their classroom is made of iron sheets and is in a very poor state, so they are not comfortable in their lessons. They do not enjoy coming to school, as children should do in their early years of learning. Our approach
With the sustained support from our donors and fundraisers, we can continue to change lives at Mix Resettlement:
• A purpose-built ECD classroom so that there are facilities for the very youngest children in the school
• Children's desks, teachers' furniture, and textbooks for all three classrooms
