NAMCOL’s TVET programmes equip Namibians with skills for the future

Staff Reporter

NAMIBIA is equipping its youth and workforce with critical technical skills through the Namibia College of Open Learning’s (NAMCOL) Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes. A recent information-sharing session at the Government Information Centre highlighted the wide range of courses, including automotive mechatronics, welding, plumbing, and occupational health and safety, designed to enhance employability, entrepreneurship, and industry readiness.

Speaking at the session, Mr. Jafet Shiimi, Automotive Mechatronics Instructor at NAMCOL, explained that TVET programmes are part of NAMCOL’s broad mandate, which was established under Act 1 of 1997. “Our goal is to provide skills and knowledge that allow Namibians to operate independently, either through entrepreneurship or by securing employment in the labour market,” he said.

Mr. Barthromeus Shileka, also an Automotive Mechatronics Instructor, outlined the practical relevance of the courses. “Automotive mechatronics, for example, integrates mechanical and electrical systems, training students on the latest technologies in vehicles today. Other trades, such as welding, plumbing, and office administration, equip learners with highly sought-after industry skills.”

The programmes are open to a broad audience, from recent school leavers to working professionals seeking formal qualifications, as well as individuals interested in short courses. Evening classes run from 5:00 to 7:00, making them accessible to those already employed.

NAMCOL also emphasises hands-on experience through compulsory job attachments. “Students gain real-world exposure, understanding the difference between efficiency and effectiveness, and learning professional discipline in workplace settings,” said Mr. Shileka.

Quality and credibility are assured, with all TVET qualifications accredited under the National Qualifications Framework and assessed by the Namibia Training Authority (NTA). “This ensures that NAMCOL graduates hold credentials recognised across Namibia’s vocational training system,” explained Mr. Shiimi.

The TVET programmes also align with national development priorities, including Vision 2030 and NDP6. “To achieve industrialisation, Namibia needs qualified artisans, technicians, and engineers. Our TVET programmes play a strategic role in producing the skilled workforce required to build infrastructure, support industry, and strengthen the economy,” said Mr. Shileka.

Affordability is supported through the Namibia Student Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF), with application fees set at N$150. “Most of our trainees are funded by NSFAF, ensuring that cost is not a barrier to acquiring vital skills,” added Mr. Shiimi.

In closing, the instructors urged employers, community leaders, and stakeholders to support the programme by opening doors for job attachments, hiring graduates, and spreading awareness of TVET opportunities. “Our doors are open to all Namibians. Whether you want to start a new career or upgrade your skills, NAMCOL has a programme for you,” said Mr. Shileka.

Interested learners can access information and application forms via NAMCOL’s website at www.namcol.edu.na.
