The Law, People and Keeping Promises

DOING WHAT NEEDS to be done when it needs to be done, setting the priorities required to execute tasks and undertake actions are ‘commonsensical’. Or is it?

Do we routinely determine the urgency and importance of tasks and actions, and then prioritize them?

Priority setting to survive in troubled times is the topic of this week’s column.

You can lie to others, but not to yourself. So, let’s be honest with ourselves.

If priorities are not set, there is a risk of everything that was urgent losing its urgency, and what was important, its importance.

Like in everyday life, priority setting is equally important in business. Look at successful economies and it becomes clear that entrepreneurs are very special people. They identify a need for goods or services in their community then ponder how that need can be satisfied, then they strategize how best to do so, muster the resources, and take the risk by starting an enterprise. Profit is their reward.

Times are tough. Not only because of the economic downturn brought about by the coronavirus. Starting a running a business is not child’s play. The challenges have been around for some time now. Think business registration, fitness certificates, certificates of good standing, labour rules and regulations, accessing loans, and finding premises, among other factors to consider. The list of obstacles, blockages, and stoppages goes on.

One thing is for sure, navigating that maze of bureaucracy with plenty of forms to complete makes starting and running an enterprise in an unfriendly business environment, a nightmare.

Complaining won’t help. The best to hope for is that those responsible for crafting laws, or for the implementation of them will value entrepreneurs as Namibia’s creators of wealth and jobs, sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, entrepreneurs must brace themselves as things might even get a lot worse before they get better. Continue tightening your belt by curtailing operating costs and get rid of those nice to have but not needed things.

The CPC business survival model we developed might be a useful guide in setting priorities. The model prioritizes compliance (C), people (P), and commitments (C).

Unpacking them in order of priority, compliance means abiding by the law. Meeting statutory obligations such as business registration renewal, lodging annual returns and paying the prescribed fee.

As an employer, this means paying monthly dues to the Social Security Commission on time, which includes paying of money deducted from staff salaries as their portion of the contribution, as well as applying to the municipality for a business fitness certificate and paying the annual compliance fee on time.

The ‘P’ of the CPC model guides entrepreneurs in caring for staff by paying employees before paying themselves. This includes leave and sick leave pay, and providing personal protection equipment to safeguard the health and well-being of employees. If you cut staff salaries, cut yours too.

Concerning the other ‘C’ commitments, the importance of relationships and honoring commitments must never be ignored. Pay the town council for services provided and water consumed. Repay loans, service supplier credit lines or accounts, and pay rental on time every month.

Applying the CPC model is not only the right thing to do, but it also demonstrates survival seriousness and commitment, to those who could lend a helping hand.
