The Ju/'hoansi Development Fund is a grassroots organization supporting education in the Nyae Nyae Conservancy, Namibia.

Supporting education for six lower primary Village Schools providing mother-tongue education to young Ju/'hoan San learners in the Nyae Nyae Conservancy, Namibia. The development of five Village Schools (grade 1-4) will support young Ju/’hoan children in their education. The project combines the construction of physical infrastructure, transport, food security and training of educators. Special focus will be placed on cultural engagement of parents and the wider Ju/’hoan community.

We are proud to have Festus as part of our team. It is this kind of motivation that is needed to make the project a success

Did you know.........

As the Ju/‘hoansi Development Fund grew, it became obvious that education could not exist in a vacuum. Even when Ju/‘hoan learners had access to text books, writing materials and instruction in mother tongue, they continued to struggle in the classroom. Nor did a traditional educational model and structure have the capacity to address the education challenges facing primary Ju/’hoan learners.

Ju/’hoan elders and parents have continually said that the current system fails their children by not addressing the needs of both learners and parents, and our mission is to create education solutions that work for children, parents and communities, all while remaining rooted in native culture.

The Ju/’hoansi bushmen (San) are extremely vulnerable, marginalized by an exceptionally low level of education. Only 1% complete high school and none attend university.

The only way to maintain their ancient heritage and for their culture to survive is through education which merges the old and the new and strengthens the connection between school, community and culture.

Mark Your Calendars: Our first school opens TOMORROW!

Nina Maritz Architects, local to Namibia, have been tasked to design five environmentally sustainable, low maintenance schools and accommodation structures, using local materials and labour, reflecting Ju/’hoan culture.

Our school designs help solve three issues:

- Ensure the schools represent the cultural and educational aspirations and visions of the Ju/’hoan community
- Enable the expression of the rich Ju/’hoan cultural heritage
- Enable ownership by the school community, from planning through construction and management of the schools.

Our goal is to improve the Nyae Nyae Lower Primary Village Schools infrastructural needs.

We however go beyond “fixing up the schools”, and have adopted a collaborative approach both focusing on solving immediate infrastructural problems, while ensuring the development of sustainable, long term solutions that promote the culture of the Ju/'hoan tribes.

Today we are sharing more about the Education Gap within the communities of Namibia and the Nyae Nyae Conservatory.

The involvement of parents and community has increased slowly over time, however there are numerous obstacles to full and effective participation in education, all of which our project is working to provide culturally relevant solutions for.
