Level Three
This lesson example demonstrates how an advance is made from Level Two to Level Three.
The 'ch' in children is a team consonant; which is why the two letters are placed together on one letter tile. This demonstrates that the two consonants combine to form a new sound. When counting syllables we learnt that we need to able to identify the vowels. In this lesson there are three consonants between the vowels. In this case, the word in most cases is split after the first consonant.
However, the same rule does not apply for the word pumpkin. Learners who have completed Levels One and Two have mastered letters, their phonogram sounds and which letters can be placed together to form sounds. Learners will realise that they will not be able to pronounce 'pkin' as the letters 'p' and 'k' cannot be placed together.

Counting syllables in longer words and compounds words are not that tricky when readers are tought how to use their vowels and consonants. Breaking words down into syllables is an important step for readers being able to break down the word into simple steps and pronouncing the words correctly using the phonogram knowledge they have already mastered.

Readers will be tought that the letter 'y' is used as a consonant and a vowel. If the 'y' is at the beginning of the word it is a consonant. If the 'y' is at the back of a word it acts as a vowel. In each case the 'y' makes a different sound.

In Level Two readers are exposed to Consonant Teams and Consonant Blends.
In Teams two or more letters are put together to make one sound. Blends are where letters retain their own individual sounds. These can be put infront or behind a word. Learners will use skills they mastered in Level One to decode these words.

Readers are introduced to structures such as Closed Syllables and Open Syllables. Thses play an important role in pronouncing long and short vowel sounds correctly and knowing when to use each of them.

To encourage learners to read it is important to bear in mind to expose them to books that are at the learners level of reading and not Grade related books. Purchase books based on themes that your child takes an interest in.
