A weld can look perfect on the outside — but what’s happening on the inside matters just as much. 👀🔥

When stainless steel is welded without proper purging, oxygen can reach the hot weld root and cause heavy oxidation, commonly known as “sugaring”. This can affect the weld’s quality and corrosion resistance.

That’s why proper preparation and technique are such an important part of professional welding.

Why Are Welds X-Rayed?

A weld may look flawless on the outside, but how do you know what’s happening inside?

X-ray testing allows inspectors to examine the internal structure of a weld without cutting it apart or damaging it. It can reveal hidden defects that aren’t visible to the naked eye and helps determine whether a weld meets the required quality standards.

This becomes especially important when welds are used in critical applications such as oil & gas, mining, marine, pipelines, structural steel and pressure vessels, where weld integrity can directly affect safety and reliability.

At the Namibia Institute of Welding, test welds are X-rayed as part of the assessment process because being a skilled welder isn't only about producing a good-looking bead. It's about producing quality work that can stand up to inspection.

Looking at a welding arc without the proper protection—even for a few seconds—can cause painful eye injuries known as "arc eye."

Always:
✔ Use the correct welding helmet shade
✔ Inspect your helmet before every job
