🎙️Stories from the Namibian House: Pronouns and Power | Episode 4
What do pronouns mean, and why do the words we use to refer to one another matter?
In this episode of the second edition of Stories from the Namibian House: What Do We Mean?, we unpacked the relationship between language, identity, belonging, and power.
Our conversation featured Ms. Emily Rufaro, a Sociology student, and Mr. Nashilongwe Mushaandja, a cultural worker, educator and writer, who brought different but complementary perspectives to the discussion.
Together, we explored how language can affirm identity and create belonging, but can also be used to exclude, invalidate, or reinforce social power. We also unpacked common misconceptions around pronouns and reflected on how our everyday language choices can contribute to more respectful and inclusive communities.
This episode invited us to think beyond grammar and ask a deeper question:
Who gets to define identity, and what happens when we choose to recognize one another through the language we use?
