New collaboration and project startup!
Our volunteers will going forward be teaching English at a local pre-school, as well as teaching about marine life and the importance of keeping the beaches clean!
Very exciting news and fun and happy days! 🥰

Our amazing volunteers have been working on our biodiversity library of the estuary.
Did you know, the estuaries are not only important for biodiversity and as a food source to the locals, but also works as storm protection? 😍

An other amazing report by .jen.underwater

The study on the smalleye stingray (Megatrygon microps) addresses how little is known about a large yet rarely observed marine species, largely due to limited scientific surveys. By systematically collecting observations from divers, photographers, and online platforms, the researchers use citizen science to reconstruct a clearer picture of its distribution and ecology 🕵‍♀️👩‍🔬

The results reveal that the species is more widespread than previously documented, while also providing insights into its behavior, habitat preferences, and interactions with other marine life. At the same time, evidence of injuries and encounters with fishing gear highlights ongoing threats from human activity🎣

Overall, the paper demonstrates that non-traditional data sources can significantly improve knowledge of elusive species, offering a practical and scalable approach to conservation research💙

🗣Attention everyone! We are happy to announce we published a new paper 🤗🔥

Beneath the surface of Mozambique’s reefs, a hidden choreography unfolds as manta rays glide into “cleaning stations” where tiny fish meticulously groom their massive clients, an interaction essential for their survival. 🐟🦈

Using cutting-edge long-life underwater video, this study captures over 600 hours of never-before-seen behaviour, revealing when manta rays visit, how they position their bodies for cleaning, and which fish specialize in different tasks. The footage uncovers a surprising rhythm to their day, with peak activity in the morning and near solitude in the afternoons. 📽

Even more striking, the research shows that human presence—especially divers—subtly but measurably disrupts these critical moments. These insights offer a powerful new lens on protecting one of the ocean’s most graceful yet vulnerable giants.✨️

Continuing on with our series…….
Here’s some interesting information on crustaceans and which creatures we’re lucky enough to see on our dives!!! 🦐🦞🦀

Today we had the pleasure of witnessing the courtship ritual of devil rays on our safety stop at Reggie’s with Devil rays have one of the ocean’s most mesmerising courtship rituals - graceful, synchronised and a little mysterious. Courtship often begins with a “train” of males following a single female. They mirror her every move - looping, gliding, and accelerating in perfect formation through the water and this can go on for hours as the males compete for her attention! When the female devil ray is ready, the lead male aligns closely with her, matching her movements with incredible precision before mating briefly. 🌊⛵️🐚

This post is to spread information on the poisonous fish that inhabit Tofo’s waters. Please remember the T.T.T rule - no touching, no teasing, no taking and in this case….no tasting, act as you would for any other creature. This toxin is very dangerous to humans so just don’t touch or consume and all will be well!
Summary of this post is to just leave these animals be!!!🐡☠️❤️‍🩹
