Transformed Leaders can Transform Communities

Equip Mozambique recently hosted a Leadership Training built around John Maxwell's The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, led by our visitor from the States, Phil Cohen.

We gathered 71 leaders from 23 civil society organizations across Mozambique. Men and women who are already serving their communities, now walking away better equipped to lead with purpose and lasting impact. This training served as an in-person extension of our digital leadership development platform, Kukura.

Over two days, participants engaged in honest debate and reflection: what qualities define a true leader, and what responsibilities come with that role. They also tackled the real challenges of leadership head-on, including the corrosive effects of corruption, and why ethics, transparency, integrity, and accountability aren't optional extras. They're the foundation of leadership that actually serves people.

On day two, Brett from Humans of Surrender led "Stories That Shine," teaching these leaders to tell their own stories with honesty and courage, a skill that will carry their impact far beyond this event.

The training closed with a ceremony awarding certificates of participation, recognizing each leader's dedication throughout the two days and their commitment to carry these values back into their own organizations and communities.

We love a full house — and this month, our doors in Beira have been open wide

We were delighted to welcome Phillip Cohen to Mozambique, together with his wife and nephew, for a firsthand look at the work of Equip Mozambique (Associação Empoderando Moçambique). They saw our projects up close — from education and community empowerment to leadership and social transformation — and spent time doing what matters most: building relationships and strengthening the partnerships that create lasting, positive change.
And there's more to come. On July 10 and 11, Phillip will lead a special leadership training here in Beira, pouring out years of experience in raising up leaders. It's a chance for our team and our community to learn, grow, and be stretched by leadership principles that transform not just individuals, but entire teams and communities.

Good leaders don't just build organizations — they build people. That's a value close to our heart, and to God's.

𝐄𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐈𝐧 𝐌𝐨𝐳𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞, 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐚 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞

Mozambique has one of the highest child marriage rates in the world, with nearly half of all girls married before they turn 18. The consequences are devastating: these girls are five to seven times more likely to die in childbirth than women over 20, and their children face a 28% higher risk of dying before age five. Beyond the physical dangers, these girls are pulled out of school, isolated from their support networks, and denied the chance to simply be children.

This week, our team brought this conversation directly to the community of Nhamisseguere, a remote rural village in Sofala Province. Nearly 300 people gathered, about two-thirds of them women, to learn about Mozambique's relatively new laws against premature unions.

The heart of the day was a powerful performance by our partner theatrical group called Nyanfuza, who brought the risks and real-life consequences of child marriage to life in a way that lectures alone never could. We were also joined by representatives from the Sofala Province Anti-Corruption Department, who spoke candidly about how corruption at local levels has too often allowed this harmful practice to continue unchecked.

“𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐬

It's a simple idea — but it has the power to reshape a whole community. This week, that truth filled our morning devotional, shared by two visitors who traveled from the United States to be with us: Wade and Lynne Wilson.

The Wilsons are in Mozambique to get to know the work of Equip Mozambique up close, and to help carry forward their new project called "Made to Belong" — an initiative built on the belief that every child belongs and deserves a place of welcome.

In our gathering, they led a reflection on something that touches us deeply: how to care for children with special needs, remembering that the way we treat a child today shapes the future they grow into. Every child is unique, created with value and purpose. Some need more time, patience, and support, but all need the same love, respect, and belonging.

Wade and Lynne also reached out to several schools, trained teachers in how to help these kids thrive, and created partnerships with other organizations trying to reach these overlooked kids.

Fátima João Manuel is 30 years old. She is a widow and a mother of three living in Beira, Mozambique. Like many of our students, she heard about the Restoring Hope sewing school through her pastor and decided to take a chance.

Over the months of training, she learned to sew, to cut fabric, and to think like a business owner. She took entrepreneurship classes. She grew in her faith through daily devotionals. And she excited to graduate this year — ready to build something of her own.

"I want to be a seamstress. I want to teach my children. And I want other women to have this same opportunity."

Fátima is not waiting to be rescued. She is already working, already dreaming, already becoming. We are grateful for every partner who makes it possible for women like Fátima to write a new chapter of their story.

𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲

Kids in Mozambique are a little more independent than their Western counterparts, so they usually walk to school by themselves and spend much of the rest of the day roaming or playing soccer in the streets with empty bottles marking the goal posts. They don't wait for their parents to take them places, and we are so thrilled that thousands of these free-range kids have chosen to spend many hours of their free time coming to our library, Biblioteca Beireano, all on their own. Most of them don't have any books at home at all, and even their schools never have enough textbooks to go around. The library for them has become a place where they can learn, grow, and discover who they are and who they can become.

Every day, these young readers walk through the doors of our library with curiosity and leave with new ideas, new questions, and a hunger to read more.

We believe that when you invest in a child's love of reading, you invest in a future shaped by wisdom, creativity, and possibility.

In April alone, our women produced more than 300 handmade items like wallets, bags, tote bags, dresses, skirts, tablecloths, and more. They were challenged when someone asked them to make a large travel duffel bag out of the colorful African fabric, but they rose to the challenge and the client was happy with their beautiful new bag!

We participated in a craft fair and sold many items. We embroidered jerseys for a local team. And one of our daughter schools — led by a graduate who is multiplying what she learned — secured their first contract to sew school uniforms.

Four women who were receiving sewing lessons inside the local prison were released this month, and they don't leave empty-handed. They leave with a skill, a renewed sense of purpose, and the knowledge that their story is not over.
This is what we mean when we talk about transformation from the inside out.
