One Stitch, One Story

It has been a season of growth for the Restoring Hope Sewing School! Our students and staff produced almost 400 items in June alone, including embroidered Bible covers, custom clothing items, and even three large curtains for a local orchestra event. Together, these women are building real skills and real income, one stitch at a time.

One of the women behind these numbers is Maria Helder, pictured here seated proudly at her own sewing machine, fully paid off through her hard work and dedication.

Maria is a mother of two daughters and graduated from the Sewing School in 2024. After graduating, she completed a seven-month internship at a tailoring shop, sharpening her skills and gaining real world experience. That experience gave her the confidence to start her own sewing business from home. Today she receives regular orders, especially for children's clothing, and dreams of expanding further by opening a small meal business alongside it.

Her work has already changed daily life for her family. Maria has been able to install a door in her home and cover essential costs like her daughter's education, water, and electricity. Beyond the economic change, Maria says the devotional times at the Sewing School strengthened her faith in God and shaped every part of her life.

Maria is one woman among many at Equip Mozambique who are not waiting to be rescued. They are building their own paths with skill, faith, and determination.

How many lives could have been different if someone had known the law in time?

Child marriage. Violence inside the home. Widows and orphans losing their inheritance to those who take advantage of their loss. These are not distant issues. They are realities quietly present in communities across Mozambique.

That is why, on Friday, August 7th, Projecto Juris brought community legal education to Mafambisse, in the Dondo District, hosted at Igreja Baptista Renovada.

Thirty one local leaders, 21 men and 10 women, gathered to learn and discuss marriage, inheritance and succession, child marriage, and domestic violence. Among them were community leaders, religious leaders, members of the local Fraternal Fellowship of Religious Leaders, and representatives of local associations.

What came out of the session was more than information. It was a commitment. Each participant pledged to carry this knowledge back into their own churches, associations, and communities, becoming multipliers of change where it is needed most.

A protected child, an informed widow, a family that knows where to turn, these all start the same way: with knowledge that arrives in time.

Many readers come to study. Célio came back to say, “thank you”.

A former student at Estoril Secondary School, he walked through our doors this month holding something he wasn't always sure he'd earn: his high school diploma! The library, he told us, changed the course of both his studies and his faith. The quiet hours he spent here with our books didn't just help him pass his classes; they helped him grow into the young man he is today. Stories like Célio's are why Biblioteca Beireano exists, a community library in Beira where anyone can read, study, learn computers, or simply find a place to belong.

In addition to serving the people of all ages who walk through our open doors, we also bring our books behind the closed doors of the central prison. Our Mobile Library carries reading and a message of hope to people the world too easily forgets, and many are using their incarcerated time wisely to grow spiritually.

Thanks to answered prayers and the generosity of many donors, the library is now freshly equipped with new tables, chairs, and the school textbooks our students can't find anywhere else.

We are so grateful for every testimony, and for a God who answers the heart cries of these Mozambicans who wanted to grow but lacked the resources to do so. Please pray with us that Biblioteca Beireano keeps drawing readers from all over our city, and that more lives will be changed through the books and healthy community that we foster here. 🙏

"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed. Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice." -Proverbs 31:8-9

At the Chiverano Market in Dondo District, our Juris team returned to walk alongside the community, this time addressing topics that touch daily life for so many families: gender-based violence, underage marriage, and land disputes. These are deep issues that affect millions of Mozambicans every year, and most do not know where to turn for help when they face these cruel injustices.

It was a moment of learning and honest conversation. 147 neighbors, mothers, fathers, and young people gathered to ask questions and better understand their rights under the law.

This work was only possible through our partnership of with other local associations such as the Association of Christian Lawyers, AJUFUS, the theatrical group Associação Nyanfuza, the Dondo Municipal Council, and above all, the local leadership and community of Nhamainga, who opened their doors to welcome this effort.

Knowing the law is one way we protect ourselves and the people we love. Juris continues moving from community to community, so that no one is left without this knowledge. Each conversation like this one reflects our belief that Mozambicans are equipped to know, defend, and live out their rights, not dependent on others to do it for them.

Graduation day at the Restoring Hope Sewing School!

We're celebrating a moment of pride, joy, and gratitude. With hard work, dedication, and a hunger to grow, another group of extraordinary women has completed their training at the Restoring Hope Sewing School.

Every stitch sewn, every garment completed, every class attended was a step toward a future that's more dignified, more independent, and more prosperous. These women didn't just learn to sew. They learned to believe in themselves, to recognize their own worth in God's eyes, and to build a new life from the inside out.

At Equip Mozambique, we believe that when you empower a woman, you transform a family and strengthen an entire community. That's what this graduation represents: real transformation, lasting impact.

From Stranger to Family

When Gabriel Matere first walked through the doors of Biblioteca Beireano, he didn't know anyone there. He was just a high school student looking for a place to study and focus.

But something unexpected happened. He wasn't treated like a stranger. He was welcomed like family.

"The staff at Biblioteca Cristã Beireano treated me like someone they already knew," Gabriel shared. "I always felt at home."

That sense of belonging gave him something just as important as books and computers, which was the stability and encouragement to keep going. This year, Gabriel graduated from Escola Secundária do Estoril, completing high school with dedication and determination.

This is what your support makes possible. Not just a library, but a community. A place where young people in Mozambique find the space, the resources, and the warmth they need to reach their full potential.

Transformed Leaders can Transform Communities

Equip Mozambique recently hosted a Leadership Training built around John Maxwell's The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, led by our visitor from the States, Phil Cohen.

We gathered 71 leaders from 23 civil society organizations across Mozambique. Men and women who are already serving their communities, now walking away better equipped to lead with purpose and lasting impact. This training served as an in-person extension of our digital leadership development platform, Kukura.

Over two days, participants engaged in honest debate and reflection: what qualities define a true leader, and what responsibilities come with that role. They also tackled the real challenges of leadership head-on, including the corrosive effects of corruption, and why ethics, transparency, integrity, and accountability aren't optional extras. They're the foundation of leadership that actually serves people.

On day two, Brett from Humans of Surrender led "Stories That Shine," teaching these leaders to tell their own stories with honesty and courage, a skill that will carry their impact far beyond this event.

The training closed with a ceremony awarding certificates of participation, recognizing each leader's dedication throughout the two days and their commitment to carry these values back into their own organizations and communities.

We love a full house — and this month, our doors in Beira have been open wide

We were delighted to welcome Phillip Cohen to Mozambique, together with his wife and nephew, for a firsthand look at the work of Equip Mozambique (Associação Empoderando Moçambique). They saw our projects up close — from education and community empowerment to leadership and social transformation — and spent time doing what matters most: building relationships and strengthening the partnerships that create lasting, positive change.
And there's more to come. On July 10 and 11, Phillip will lead a special leadership training here in Beira, pouring out years of experience in raising up leaders. It's a chance for our team and our community to learn, grow, and be stretched by leadership principles that transform not just individuals, but entire teams and communities.

Good leaders don't just build organizations — they build people. That's a value close to our heart, and to God's.

𝐄𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐈𝐧 𝐌𝐨𝐳𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞, 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐚 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞

Mozambique has one of the highest child marriage rates in the world, with nearly half of all girls married before they turn 18. The consequences are devastating: these girls are five to seven times more likely to die in childbirth than women over 20, and their children face a 28% higher risk of dying before age five. Beyond the physical dangers, these girls are pulled out of school, isolated from their support networks, and denied the chance to simply be children.

This week, our team brought this conversation directly to the community of Nhamisseguere, a remote rural village in Sofala Province. Nearly 300 people gathered, about two-thirds of them women, to learn about Mozambique's relatively new laws against premature unions.

The heart of the day was a powerful performance by our partner theatrical group called Nyanfuza, who brought the risks and real-life consequences of child marriage to life in a way that lectures alone never could. We were also joined by representatives from the Sofala Province Anti-Corruption Department, who spoke candidly about how corruption at local levels has too often allowed this harmful practice to continue unchecked.

“𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐬

It's a simple idea — but it has the power to reshape a whole community. This week, that truth filled our morning devotional, shared by two visitors who traveled from the United States to be with us: Wade and Lynne Wilson.

The Wilsons are in Mozambique to get to know the work of Equip Mozambique up close, and to help carry forward their new project called "Made to Belong" — an initiative built on the belief that every child belongs and deserves a place of welcome.

In our gathering, they led a reflection on something that touches us deeply: how to care for children with special needs, remembering that the way we treat a child today shapes the future they grow into. Every child is unique, created with value and purpose. Some need more time, patience, and support, but all need the same love, respect, and belonging.

Wade and Lynne also reached out to several schools, trained teachers in how to help these kids thrive, and created partnerships with other organizations trying to reach these overlooked kids.
